PHILADELPHIA - Senior Mandi Bäck scored the golden goal with four seconds left in overtime to give the University of Dayton women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over La Salle. With the win Dayton improves to 8-0-4 overall and 4-0-0 in the Atlantic 10.
La Salle scored first and the Flyers had to fight back to keep their unbeaten record intact.
"We persevered. We did not play a good first half, but we didn't play terrible," said Tucker. "We gave up a goal on a rebound on a corner kick. The coaches challenged the girls at the half. It was a small field and the Explorers' defense was packed in. The team responded and played a much better second half. We We were dominant. It was night and day between the first and second half."
With less than 10 minutes left in the match, the Flyers evened the score. Junior Kelly Blumenschein scored the equalizer in the 81st minute. She took a corner kick, Alysha Mallon got a head on it but it went off the crossbar. Blumenschein didn't quit on the play and chipped the ball to the back of the net, for her third goal of the season.
Despite outshooting the Explorers 24-6 in regulation, the match went to overtime with the score knotted at 1-1.
It looked like the game would go to another extra period until Bäck scored the 11th game winner of her career with just four seconds left on the clock (99:56).
"Mac (Lauren MacCormick) headed the ball over the defender and I just ran through it," said Bäck. "It was a good feeling to score. I was just so excited that we won. We all celebrated for two minutes and I was getting tackled by everyone on the team. It's awesome. It just takes us closer to getting in the NCAA tournament."
"Mandi scored the goal in the first overtime with players draped all over her," added Tucker. "I'm proud of the girls for fighting back. There was a heck of a crowd with plenty of Flyer fans - there were several Dayton alums there from the Philadelphia area."
Dayton outshot the Explorers 5-0 in the overtime period. The game marked just the third time this season the UD defense had allowed a goal.
It marks the second time this season the Flyers have been down 1-0 and came back to win the match 2-1. Just as they did against La Salle, Blumenschein and Bäck scored the goals in Dayton's 2-1 win over Miami (Ohio) after falling behind 1-0.
Dayton continues Conference action when they host Charlotte this Friday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. ET at Baujan Field in a rematch of the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship Final.
