ANN ARBOR, Mich. -
The University of Dayton Flyers pushed sixth-ranked Michigan to the brink in every game, but eventually saw their undefeated streak snapped at the hands of the Wolverines in the second match of the Michigan/adidas Invitational. The Flyers fell 3-0, extending each game beyond 25 points. (26-28, 24-26, 28-26).
Dayton's loss comes on the heels of a gritty come-from-behind win against Oregon State earlier in the day. Oregon State is receiving votes in the latest AVCA coaches poll.
"It was a great volleyball match. I thought we had opportunities in game one. We had four game points we weren't able to convert. In game three we had three game points we weren't able to convert on," said head coach Kelly Sheffield. " It was disappointing to not convert on those opportunities against a really good team."
All-American middle blocker Lindsay Fletemier paced the Flyers with 14 kills. In Friday night's loss, she surpassed 900 kills in just her third season of play. Her new total is 913. Fletemier was also a force defensively notching three solo blocks and five block assists.
Junior transfer Amanda Cowdrey had 10 kills and 14 digs to notch her third consecutive double-double.
"Our passers did a really good job. Paige and Amanda were tough. That was a big key. Lindsay had a really good day," said Sheffield. "She was a force and had tremendous presence about her. She was tough against two defenses that were set up to stop her."
Kacie Hausfeld had 21 assists, while freshman Hannah Clancy tallied 13.
The Flyers tallied seven service aces in three sets of play. Chelsy Christoff added three, while Hausfeld pieced two aces together. Fletemier and freshman libero Paige Vargas both had one ace.
Tournament host Michigan has not lost a non-conference match in over 50 games.
The Flyers will face the Marquette Eagles at 5:30 p.m. ET on Saturday at Crisler Arena to close out the Michigan/adidas Invitational.
