DAYTON, Ohio –  The University of Dayton bounced back in a big way with an 83-31 win over Richmond Saturday at UD Arena. UD (15-4, 3-1 Atlantic 10) dealt the Spiders, previously unbeaten in Atlantic 10 play, their worst loss of the season, including their 86-37 loss to No. 1 Connecticut on Nov. 28.

The margin of victory, (52) is the second largest for the Flyers since they began Division I basketball in 1986. The largest was a 55-point win over Wright State on Dec. 18, 2001. The 31 points allowed is a season-best for the Flyers, along with the 18.6 percent from the field they held the Spiders.

Thirteen different Flyers scored in the game, led by 16 points from senior Kendel Ross. Justine Raterman had 12 and Casey Nance added 10 points. Ross led UD on the boards with eight rebounds. Kristin Daugherty and Sam MacKay each had four assists to pace Dayton. Olivia Applewhite led the squad with three steals, and Nance had two blocks, giving her 10 consecutive games with at least one block.

The Spiders (14-5, 3-1 A-10) were held without a field goal for 11 minutes spanning from the 7:35 in the first half until 16:35 of the second half. They had another draught from the 14:57 mark of the second half to 6:25.

Dayton started the game with an 8-0 run started off by a Patrice Lalor trey at 19:37. UD used another 6-0 run to go up 31-13 with 8:25 left in the half. Richmond’s leading scorer Brittani Shells, whose 18.3 ppg also lead the Atlantic 10, was held to just one field goal in the game, knocking down a jay at the 7:35 mark. The Flyers went on to close out the first half, outscoring the Spiders 14-0. UD held the Spiders to just 17.1 percent shooting from the field in the opening half.

The Flyers cruised to a 45-15 lead after the first 20 minutes of play. The 15 points is the lowest allowed in a half by the Flyers this season. The 30-point cushion at the half was the second highest for UD this season; the Flyers were up on Milwaukee-Wisconsin 56-19 at halftime on Dec. 4, also at UD Arena. Dayton’s 45 points were the second highest in the first half this season, only behind the Milwaukee Wisconsin performance.

In a span of a week, the Flyers will have played the three Atlantic 10 teams that are unbeaten in conference play. Following the Richmond contest, Dayton travels to Pittsburgh for a battle against the Duquesne Dukes (currently 14-5 overall, 4-0 A-10) on Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. ET. Then the following Saturday, Jan. 30, UD travels to Cincinnati to take on No. 10 Xavier (currently 13-3, 3-0 A-10) at 6 p.m. ET.

Postgame Quotes
Coach Jim Jabir

We were able to maintain it today and everyone played so well. It was very impressive to see us play that way. We played really great defense throughout. Kari gave us a lot of help. I’m very proud of the way we played today. But, remember, Richmond is a very good team.  We have to learn to play on the road. We love playing here and it showed this afternoon, but we need to learn how to play on the road.

Kendel Ross
We are very dangerous this year. We’ve been attacking on the inside and the outside. That’s what makes it fun, starting out on the outside and then looking for open hooks on the inside. Last year, during the tournament they tried to put a lot of guards on us. This year they tried that again. We knew then that we needed to smash it inside. That’s what we did, we became very dangerous.

Justine Raterman
Everything was on today. That’s what made it a lot of fun. Everything we did seem to work. We were going  inside, going outside. We just clicked today and that’s what makes it so fun out there with this group of girls. It makes it a blast out there playing.

Too many times this year we’ve had a lead at halftime and watched it dwindle away. We wanted to come out and let them know who we were. It’s always nice to rebound from a poor game and prove yourself to everyone. We need to get our confidence up for our next conference game. We definitely remember that big upset last year. So, we wanted to come out and grab this one at full force.

Casey Nance
Our team came out with so much intensity on both the defensive and offensive ends. I don’t think that any team could’ve stopped us today. We played very very well. We have been watching a lot of film and I’ve been working on a ton of catch and shoot drills and have been having a lot of success.
