PHILADELPHIA – Freshman Stephanie Emery and sophomore Alexis Garcia each scored a goal, senior Jerica DeWolfe had two assists, and senior goalkeeper Lisa Rodgers had six saves to lead the University of Dayton women’s soccer team to a 2-0 win over Saint Joseph’s (5-9-0, 2-3-0 A-10)Sunday at Finnesey Field.
“The girls played really hard and played well at times. We didn’t finish as well as we should have. We did a good job with possession,” said UD Head Coach
Mike Tucker. “Saint Joseph’s made us work and they made us battle. They were good in the air and very athletic. It was an entertaining fast-paced game.”
With the victory Dayton (14-2, 6-0 A-10) remains atop the Atlantic 10 standings and is the only undefeated team in the conference. UD is unbeaten in 20 consecutive A-10 regular season games, not conceding a conference loss since 2008. The Flyers have outscored A-10 opponents 19-1 in six games this season.
Emery scored the second goal of her career in the 22nd minute on a header off a corner kick from DeWolfe.
Garcia scored her fourth goal of the season in the 70th minute, also on a header on a corner taken by DeWolfe.
“We scored on two well-taken corner kicks by Jerica,” said Tucker. “Steph and Lex did a good job at putting them away. We practiced that all last week and it’s nice to see that hard work pay off.”
Rodgers is 10-0, owns a.29 GAA and has eight of Dayton's league-leading 10 shutouts.
“I love shutouts. It gives us a great opportunity for the win,” said Tucker. “We had to battle today for this one.”
The Flyers continue their five-game Atlantic 10 road swing at Duquesne on Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. and then at St. Bonaventure on Sunday, Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.
