DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton women’s basketball team opened the 2010-11 season in thrilling, if disappointing fashion Friday, falling in double overtime to the Penn State Lady Lions 112-107 Friday at UD Arena.
Penn State jumped out to a 10-0 lead to start the game, but the Flyers rallied to a 40-40 tie at the half. The Flyers got their first lead of the game seven seconds into the second half with a 3-pointer scored by Justine Raterman.
The second half was a back-and-forth battle between the Lady Lions and the Flyers with nine ties and three lead changes. Dayton led by six with 1:29 to go, but back-to-back three-pointers by Lady Lions’ Zhaque Gray, the second with 15 seconds remaining tied the game at 83. With a turnover by UD and a missed 3-pointer by Gray with one second on the clock, the game went into its first overtime.
The first overtime period featured five lead changes and three ties. A Raterman layup with 22 seconds left tied it for the last time at 98, and a blocked shot by UD’s Kristen Daugherty with five ticks left sent it to the second OT.
The Lady Lions scored the first four points of the second extra period and the Flyers could not battle back as PSU scored on six of its next seven possessions.
Justine Raterman led all scorers with a career-high with 32 points. She was also UD’s top rebounder with nine boards. Kristin Daugherty added 25 points, with five assists and three blocked shots. Kari Daugherty added 13 points and Patrice Lalor had 12 points and six assists.
Penn State was led by Zhaque Gray (27 points), Alex Bentley (26 points) and Nikki Greene (20 points and 16 rebounds)
The game was a record game in many ways. The 219 points scored by both teams was the most points scored by both teams at a Dayton game, breaking the old mark of 203 (Dayton 103, Cleveland State 100 in one OT) on Jan. 17, 1984. It was also the most points scored by a Penn State opponent, eclipsing the previous mark of 103 by USC on Dec. 21, 1980.
The Flyers’ next game is on the road at 25/24 Michigan State on Monday Nov. 15 at 7:00 p.m. ET. Next weekend, Nov. 20 and 21, Dayton will participate in the Minnesota Subway Classic, playing South Dakota on Saturday and either UW-Milwaukee or Minnesota on Sunday.
UD is not home again until Saturday, Nov. 27 when it hosts the University of Illinois-Chicago at 2:00 p.m. ET.
