COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Dayton women’s soccer team saw its season come to an end Sunday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Ohio State (15-4-2) advanced to the Sweet 16 with a 4-2 advantage in the PK shootout in the NCAA Second Round match. After 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtimes the score was tied 0-0.
Senior Kelly Blumenschein and junior Kelsey Miller both converted their penalty kicks for the Flyers. OSU converted all four of its attempts.
It’s the second consecutive season the Flyers exited the NCAA tournament in the second round. Dayton finished the year with a 19-3-1 record and as the 2010 regular season and tournament Atlantic 10 champions.
At the first half the score remained 0-0. With the wind at their backs, OSU held an 8-3 advantage on shots.
Junior Emily Kenyon had Dayton’s best opportunity, taking hard shot in the box that Katie Baumgardner knocked down in the 25th minute.
Rodgers thwarted OSU’s best chance of the first half, a header by Lauren Granberg in the 37th minute. Rodgers stepped up again with a heads up save on Paige Maxwell’s header at the goal line after a Buckeye corner kick in the 70th minute.
Tiffany Cameron’s header hit opposite post after a chip into the box from Kristen Niederhaus in the 77th minute for Ohio State.
Kathleen Beljan blocked a point-blank by OSU’s Granberg early in the first overtime.
Danica Wu had what appeared to be a wide open goal following a Buckeye corner kick in the 98th minute and Rodgers made a diving save to keep the Flyers alive.
Rodgers finished the match with a season-high seven saves.
In the match, the Buckeyes had 24 shots to Dayton’s seven. OSU had 10 corner kicks to Dayton’s two.
