FLYERS OPEN UP SEASON WITH STRONG PERFORMANCE AT OILER OPENER

RESULTS

FINDLAY, Ohio
– The University of Dayton Flyers had a number of strong performers in their season-opening meet at the Oiler Opener in Findlay, Ohio on Dec. 3 and 4.

“I thought we did a good job of being competitive in our first meet of the year,” Dayton Head Coach Adam Steinwachs said. “We entered a limited number of events, but the ones we entered in, I thought we did a good job with.”

The Flyers were led with first-place finishes from senior Mallory Barnes (weight throw) and junior Courtney Siebenaller (pole vault). In addition, a number of student-athletes also placed high at the meet.  Junior Kelly Johnston (800m), sophomore Katie Nageotte (pole vault), senior Johnna Zaccari (shot put) and senior Kerry Allen (weight throw) all finished in the top three for UD.

Barnes’ first-place throw was 66-02.50, outdistancing the field by nearly four feet. Allen finished second with a new personal best in the event with a distance of 62-03.00. Sophomore Renee Otte finished ninth with a distance of 52-01.25.

Barnes was also strong in the shot put where she finished second with a 46-10.75 throw. Barnes was followed by Zaccari, who threw 46-05.25. Sophomore Christine Borchers placed eighth with a distance of 42-07.50.

Freshman Cassie Grandstaff finished fifth in the 60 meter dash for the Flyers with a time of 7.83.

Siebenaller set an 11-11.75 mark for first place, while Nageotte reached 11-05.75 for second place. Senior Pembroke Strickland finished fifth at 10-11.75, while freshman Katrina Steinhauser rounded out the Top 10 with a height of 10-06.00.

Johnston placed second in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:23.10. Freshman Kassy Thomas finished in the tenth with a time of 2:32.09.

Freshman Brittany Reid reached 5-04.25 to place fifth in the high jump.  Freshman Juliana Lawniczak reached 5-02.25 for sixth and freshman Maddi Schmidt finished ninth with a height of 5-00.25.

Dayton finished fifth in the 4x400 relay with a final time of 3:58.62.

UD will return to competition after the holiday break at the BGSU Team Challenge on Jan. 15 in Bowling Green, Ohio.
