DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton men’s tennis ended a three match losing streak, tallying their second win of the season and improving to 2-4 with the defeat of Kennesaw State in their home-opener on Saturday.
Dayton’s 4-3 win over the Owls marks the first-ever meeting of the two teams.
The Flyers picked up an early lead at the Queen City Racquet Club in Cincinnati, sweeping doubles play. Duo Matt Sherman and Joe West won their second consecutive match, topping Justin Suesserman/Tyler Mills (8-5) at the No. 1 spot.
Robbie McCallum and Bryce Warnock teamed up at the No. 2 position, also contributing to Dayton’s doubles point with an 8-5 decision over Simon Janik/Michael Langel. No. 3 team Robert Salcedo/Austin Weigand, who boast a 3-0 record as a pair, beat Elliot Kahler/Gokalp Ozdemir, 8-4.
Sophomore Robbie McCallum struggled early at No. 3 singles, dropping the first set to Kennesaw State’s Gianni Kubin, 2-6. He battled back to a 6-3 win in the second set, extending play to three frames and eventually taking the tie-breaker, 6-2.
Matt Sherman, lone senior on Dayton’s squad, made his career debut at the No. 1 singles spot, handing Tyler Mills his fifth straight loss of the season with a 7-5, 6-1 win.
“I was a little nervous to be moved up to No. 1, but I just took it one play at a time and did what I had to do. It feels great to come out with a win,” noted Sherman.
With a 3-3 split between the Flyers and Owls, Dayton’s fate rested in the hands of sophomore Austin Weigand. In addition to teammates Sherman and McCallum, Weigand went undefeated against Kennesaw State, beating Ryan Boultell 6-2, 7-5 and securing UD’s first Division I victory of the 2010 season.
Dayton will return to the court on Tuesday, as they host Butler at 1 p.m. ET.
