Dayton, Ohio – The University of Dayton softball squad suffered two non-conference losses to Butler University Friday at UD Stadium. The Flyers fell, 9-0 and 8-0.
UD (7-12) was held to just three hits over both games. In the first game, sophomore Raime Cronkhite drilled a single up the middle to start the sixth inning. Shelby Pohlman put down a sacrifice bunt to advance Cronkhite to second. A passed ball would send Cronkhite to third but the Flyers were unable to generate any more hits. Freshman Kathleen Maloof also notched a single in the bottom of the fourth.
The Flyers failed to establish an offensive rhythm in the second game as well. Senior Molly Meyer registered UD’s only hit of the game. Meyer hit a strong ball to center field. It appeared that Meyer would tally Dayton’s first triple of the season, but she was called out at third on the throw.
In the fourth, down only two, the Flyers looked like they might put some runs on the board. The inning started with a walk, allowing Maloof to reach first. Meyer hit a short one to second base that had her out at first but sent Maloof to second. An error by the Bulldogs and another walk would fill the bags but with two outs, Cronkhite grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the inning.
Butler (16-3) scored two runs in the first and added some padding with multiple runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Freshman Sarah Wedel struck out three in five innings of work for the Flyers. Both game ended in the sixth inning by the run-rule.
Dayton returns to action tomorrow, with it takes on Youngstown State in a doubleheader. The first game starts at 1 p.m. ET, with the second game to start at approximately 3 p.m. ET.
