COPELAND STEPS DOWN AS WOMEN'S ROWING HEAD COACH

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton has announced that Derek Copeland is stepping down as the head coach of the Flyer women’s rowing program.

Copeland recently completed his third season at the helm of the Dayton program. He was the fourth Flyer head coach in the program’s history since the sport moved up to varsity status.

“It is with mixed emotions that I am announcing my resignation as head rowing coach at the University of Dayton,” Copeland said. “I have been privileged to work with great student-athletes and people within the athletics department. I hope the student-athletes have learned from me, as I have certainly benefitted from working with them. I am proud of the things we have accomplished.”

Last season, Copeland led the Flyers to their first NCAA appearance as UD competed in the NCAA South/Central Regional. Copeland also saw his team captain, Lydia Caldwell, earn a CRCA All-Central Region Second Team selection and a (CoSIDA)/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District second team distinction.

Copeland led the Flyers to two fourth place finishes in 2008 and 2009 at the Atlantic 10 Championship and had eight Flyer rowers earn All-Atlantic 10 Honors during his three-year tenure.

“Derek has been a consummate professional and always put the student-athletes in his program first,” UD Associate Director of Athletics Mike Kelly said. “He stepped in and made an immediate impact with our women’s rowing program the past three seasons. You couldn't ask for a better person to serve as a role model and mentor for our student-athletes.”

Copeland resigned to take an assistant coaching position at the University of Louisville. A search to replace Copeland will begin immediately.
