DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton softball team finished its fall schedule with a 4-1-2 record after going unbeaten in the final weekend of play in the Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic hosted by Ohio State.
The Flyers tied Ohio 1-1 and Ohio State 0-0 behind dominant pitching performances. UD beat Otterbein 2-0 as the pitching staff combined for 21 innings pitched over the weekend without allowing an earned run. The staff also struck out 21 while issuing just four walks in the three games.
Senior
Sarah Wedel pitched the first five innings against Ohio, allowing three hits and striking out four. Freshman Kayla English pitched the final two innings, striking out three and allowing one hit.
Sophomore
Rachel Archer was 2-for-4 and scored the lone run for the Flyers. Senior slugger
Lauren Nacke had the game-tying RBI going 1-for-4. Ohio scored an unearned run in the first inning. In the sixth inning Dayton knotted the game at one apiece on Archer’s run, however, the Flyers were thrown out at home trying to tally the go-ahead run. No extra innings were played in the tournament.
English made the start against the Buckeyes in the second game. English pitched a complete game shutout, striking out six while allowing five hits. Archer and Sophomore
Kasi Vazquez were 1-for-3. Sophomore
Dana Trotta was 1-for-2.
Junior pitcher Sydney Cicchetti started UD’s final game against Otterbein. Cicchetti allowed two hits while striking out five and issuing two walks. Sophomore
Alysha Isaacson pitched two innings in relief allowing one hit and striking out one.
The Flyers surged in the sixth inning, racking up four hits and scoring the only runs of the game. Freshman Natalie Mariano started the push with a pinch-hit single that allowed her to score on Vazquez’s base hit for the game-winning run. Junior
Kathleen Maloof was driven home for the second run of the game on a base hit by senior
Courtney Kutsulis. Maloof was 1-for-2 with a double and Mariano was 1-for-1.
Dayton returns 13 from last year's team that advanced to the Atlantic 10 Tournament for the first time since 2000.
