DAYTON, Ohio - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced individuals and teams which earned 2010 Division I All-Academic Cross Country status on Thursday.
University of Dayton senior Chris Lemon was one of 56 student-athletes honored for individual status. He is the first UD men’s cross country athlete to earn this national accolade.
The Flyer men’s cross country team was also honored. Its 3.52 GPA ranks sixth-best in the country, and is also the best of the six Atlantic 10 teams that made the list. It marks the 15th consecutive season Dayton has earned this team recognition, including all 14 seasons in which Rich Davis has been head coach of the Flyer men’s cross country program.
“There is a direct correlation between student-athlete success in college distance running and academic achievement,” said Davis. “Our unique year-round distance running program provides Dayton Flyer student-athletes with the opportunity to achieve academic success combined with the demands of their athletic pursuits.”
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the NCAA region’s top 15 (or top 10 percent) in 2010.
Lemon put together one of the best careers in UD men’s cross country history. This season he earned All-Great Lakes Region honors by finishing fifth, and he became the only men’s cross country runner in UD history to qualify for the NCAA National Championship twice in his career. For the second consecutive season Lemon was named the A-10 Student Athlete of the Year. He carries a 3.94 GPA as a double major in education and Spanish.
To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have started at least five at their respective NCAA regional championship.
