DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton has placed the most student-athletes on the Academic All-Pioneer Football League squads for the eighth straight year, and for the 16th time in the 18-year history of the league. Eleven Flyers were picked in a vote of the league's sports information directors, including a league-high eight first team selections.
Davidson was second with five first-team picks, and seven overall.
Redshirt seniors Brandon Wingeier and Steve Valentino were back-to-back first team selections. Wingeier, a defensive end who was the first Flyer to be selected as a First Team Academic All-American in any sport, majored in Mechanical Engineering. Quarterback Steve Valentino, the two-time PFL Offensive Player of the Year, was an Entrepreneurship major.Â
Another redshirt senior, placekicker Nick Glavin, was named to this year’s first team. He was also on the first team in 2009. Glavin was a Chemical Engineering major. Two more redshirt seniors – offensive guard Tyler Friedrich and linebacker Joe Ries – moved up to the first team after being named to the second team last year. Ries is a Sport Management major. Friedrich is in Exercise Physiology.
Also named to the first team were senior offensive guard Dan Fornek, senior safety A.J. Kaltenbach and defensive end Devon Langhorst. Friedrich is in Exercise Physiology. Kaltenbach is a Business Marketing major and Langhorst is earning his degree as an Intervention Specialist.
On the second team, senior offensive guard Dan Prindle was an Academic All-PFL selection for the second straight season. Joining Prindle on the second team were senior linebacker Ross Fumagalli and senior wide receiver Justin Watkins.  Prindle majors in Mechanical Engineering, Fumagalli in Entrepreneurship and Watkins in Special Education.Â
The Academic All-PFL team was created to recognize student-athletes who excel on the field and in the classroom. The student athlete must be a starter or important reserve, reached sophomore standing academically and have at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average.
Since the team's origin in 1993, nearly 30 percent (196 of 694) of the PFL All-Academic selections have been Dayton Flyers.
The Flyers were 10-1 on the season, including a first-place finish in the Pioneer Football League after going 8-0 in the PFL. UD was ranked 25th in both the final Sports Network and AFCA Coaches’ Polls.
