DAYTON, Ohio - The No. 18 University of Dayton volleyball team swept Fordham Friday night in Dayton to improve to 6-0 in Atlantic 10 play.
Shayne Brown led the team with 13 kills in 17 attempts while Megan Campbell chipped in 12 kills and Rachel Krabacher added 10 kills and nine digs. Samantha Selsky recorded 41 assists to lead Dayton as well. Campbell was also strong defensively, recording seven blocks (1 solo, 5 assisted) in the match.
Fordham took an initial lead 3-2, but Dayton quickly rallied and took control of the first set. The Rams weren't going down without a fight thought and kept the game within a few points. Flyers' head coach Kelly Sheffield was forced to call a time out at 11-10 in order to halt a Fordham rally. The break worked as Dayton came out and stayed on top of the Rams for the rest of set one. The Flyers pulled ahead 1-0 with a 25-19 first set.
Dayton carried its momentum over into set No. 2, taking a 7-3 lead with the help of the slide attack. Fordham was forced to take a time out in order to slow down the Flyers' offense. The strategy did not work though as Shayne Brown then took over for Dayton and gave the hosts a 15-7 advantage. Brown was 9-of-10 attacking at this point in the match. The Flyers cruised past the Rams in set No. 2, taking a 2-0 lead with a score of 25-11.
With the 2-0 advantage and a rowdy crowd in their favor, the Flyers dominated the third set from start to finish. The defense of Megan Campbell and the offense of Brown propelled Dayton to a 25-19 victory in the third and final set.
As a team, Dayton (14-4, 6-0 A-10) hit for an outstanding .411 average while holding Fordham to a .172 mark. The Flyers also out-blocked the Rams 9-2 on the night.
Attendance was 774 Friday in the Frericks Center. Fordham falls to 12-13 on the year and 4-2 in conference play.
The Flyers return to action Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Frericks Center when they host Rhode Island (6-12, 2-3 A-10).
