DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's soccer team (11-5-1, 5-3-1 A-10) beat Rhode Island 4-0 in the final game of the regular season to earn a berth in the Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Championship in Charlotte, N.C. No. 6 seed Dayton will face No. 3 seed Xavier Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. on Transamerica Field.

The Flyers had goals from redshirt freshman Ryan Peterson, junior Abe Keller, graduate student Eddie Jones and freshman Maik Schoonderwoerd. Jones also had two assists in the match. Sophomore David Abidor also tallied an assist.

Freshman Chris Froschauer posted his second consecutive shutout. The freshman goalkeeper made six saves against the Rams, and has not allowed a goal in the last 195 minutes of action. Froschauer is the only freshman in Div. I soccer to play every minute of every game between the pipes this season.

Dayton scored three first-half goals to take a decisive lead early in the match. Although the Flyers were outshot 23-19, a number of Rhode Island's opportunities came in the second half as they pressed numbers forward. URI also had an edge in corner kicks 8-5.

The Flyers opened up the scoring in the sixth minute as Peterson timed his run perfectly on a long ball that was placed by Jones. Peterson beat Rhode Island goalkeeper Adam Blanchard one-on-one to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Jones continued to distribute the ball well from the midfield. In the 13th minute he played a through ball inside to Keller from the 18-yard box to score near post.

In the 33rd minute it was Jones' turn to find the back of the net, lacing a direct kick from 30 yards out to beat Blanchard near post.

Rhode Island outshot Dayton in the second half 15-9, but the Flyers were able to capitalize on a long service from Abidor following a foul in the 84th minute. Abidor's long ball came in to Schoonderwoerd who headed it past the keeper on the right post.

With Sunday's win, Dayton has clinched a berth in the 2012 Atlantic 10 Championships hosted by Charlotte Nov. 8-11 at Transamerica Field. The 2012 A-10 Championship Game on Sunday, Nov. 11 will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.
