FLYERS RETURN TO ACTION AT FROST CLASSIC

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton softball team (0-4) hits the road this weekend for the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tenn. Dayton will face Cleveland State (0-4), Tennessee Tech (4-5), Belmont (0-7), Ball State (2-2) and tournament host Chattanooga (5-3).

Dayton is led by junior Carlyn Harlow who is hitting .500 through the first weekend of play. Junior Kathleen Maloof swatted three doubles last weekend and moved to second all-time on UD’s career doubles list. Maloof has 32 career doubles and needs eight to surpass Tanya Leet who set the record of 39 in 2000.

Sophomore Alysha Isaacson leads the pitching staff early in the year. Isaacson (0-2) has a 1.62 ERA in 13 innings pitched.

UD opens the tournament on Friday, Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. ET against the Cleveland State Vikings. Cleveland State University finished its opening weekend with an 0-4 record. The Vikings are led by junior outfielder Caila Ferro. Ferro batted .462 last weekend, while picking up six hits, including her first collegiate home run. Junior infielder Dara Toman is hitting .333 after the first weekend, and broke a school record by hitting her 27th career home run. Senior Megan Bashak leads the pitching staff with 10 strikeouts in 14 innings and 2.00 ERA.

The Flyers also play the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles on Friday at 3:30 p.m. ET. Tennessee Tech enters the Frost Classic riding a two-game win streak and an overall record of 4-5. Samantha Everett comes into the tournament as the Golden Eagles’ leading hitter at .375. In the circle, senior Holly Thomas has registered three of Tech’s four wins. She has struck out 19 batters in 33 innings, and has held opponents to a .169 batting average.

Dayton returns to action on Saturday against the Belmont Bruins at 1:15 p.m. ET. Belmont, 0-7, is led by freshman shortstop Kirbie Ferrell. Ferrell leads the Bruins early in the season with a .364 batting average, eight hits and three RBI. Junior Becca Gift and sophomore Mia Vierra are the only two Bruins who have pitched this Spring. Gift has a 9.00 ERA.

UD turns around to play the Ball State Cardinals following the conclusion of the Dayton/Belmont game at approximately 3:30 p.m. ET. Ball State is coming off of a 2-2 opening weekend at the Quality Inn Classic. Sophomore slugger Taylor Rager is off to an impressive start.  The 2011 First Team All-Mid-American Conference and All-Freshman Team selection has hit at a .615 clip, with two home runs and five RBI. Another 2011 First-Team All-MAC selection, Amanda Montalto is hitting .400 for the Cardinals. Kim Mazzapica anchors a pitching staff that has a combined 2.20 ERA and has allowed only ten earned runs in 28.2 innings.

Dayton closes out play in the Frost Classic on against tournament host Chattanooga at 1:15 p.m. ET. The Lady Mocs enter the weekend with a 5-3 record. Michelle Fuzzard, the 2011 Southern Conference Player of the Year, is hitting .450 through eight games. She has hit three home runs and has driven in 13 runs. Fuzzard also has the lowest ERA on the pitching staff, with a 2.55 average entering the Frost Classic. Freshman Taylor Deason is 3-2 and has 23 strikeouts in 25.1 innings pitched.
