DAYTON, Ohio – Michael Deyhle (men’s soccer) and Emily Zimmerman (women’s cross country) were named the top student-athletes at the University of Dayton during the Office of Academic Services for Student-Athletes (OASSA) Sixth Annual Scholar-Athlete Awards Reception on Tuesday evening.
Deyhle and Zimmerman were presented with the Presidential Scholar-Athlete Award, which is designed to be the most prestigious award presented at the annual OASSA Scholar-Athlete Awards Reception. It recognizes two student-athletes, one male and one female, who have demonstrated academic excellence, qualities of leadership, and service to the University of Dayton community.
A total of 151 student-athletes were honored for academic achievement in the
last calendar year with nine awards presented during the reception at the Kennedy Union Ballroom on campus.
The OASSA Academic Cup, which goes to the Flyer team with the highest combined GPA, was awarded to the Flyer
women’s golf team. Coach
Sally Kosters’ squad boasts a 3.66 cumulative GPA. Currently 15 of Dayton's 16 intercollegiate programs have cumulative GPAs of over 3.0.
Deyhle is a three-time recipient of the 4.0 Flyers Award, a two-time member of the OASSA All-Academic Team (with the highest grade point average on his team) as well as a member of the 2010 CoSIDA Academic All-District IV First Team and the 2011 All-Ohio Academic First Team. As the men’s soccer captain in 2011, the Cincinnati native was distinguished with men’s soccer’s “The Program” Achievement of Excellence Award for the second consecutive season. On the field, Deyhle was the team’s Defensive Player of the Year with 29 team shutouts in his three-year career with the Flyers.
Dyhle maintains a 3.85 GPA in biology after completing his junior season of athletic eligibility last Fall. As an academic senior he will graduate this May with plans to enter medical school.
Zimmerman was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American for the Flyer women’s cross country and track & field teams last season. The Dayton native is a four-time recipient of the 4.0 Flyers Award and has twice been a member of the OASSA All-Academic Team (highest GPA on team). Zimmerman played a part in UD’s first women’s cross country Atlantic 10 Conference title in 2009 and track & field’s first A-10 Conference title in 2010. Last season she qualified for the Track & Field NCAA Regional in the 10K race. The two-time winner of the team’s Most-Improved Runner Award has been serving as a Team Captain for the past two seasons.
Zimmerman has maintained a 4.0 GPA for her entire collegiate career and will graduate this May with a teacher education degree in English. She is competing in her final season on the track this Spring.

His talent, work ethic and leadership abilities as Team Captain on the soccer field have provided a positive atmosphere for our team to compete in. He always chooses to be energetic, passionate, selfless and completely dedicated to achieving success.”
-Dennis Currier
Head Coach, Men’s Soccer
“In my interactions with Michael he has impressed me with his maturity, intellect, native ability and motivation for a medical career. His personality, strength of character, integrity and overall friendly demeanor will serve him well after his undergraduate education.”
-Albert J. Burky, Ph.D
Professor of Biology
“Emily is a bright, energetic, compassionate and genuinely well-rounded. She shows up every day ready to work tirelessly – always with enthusiasm and heart. It is important to her to become a student of whatever task she takes on, whether it is school, training or competing.”
-Sarah Hinkley
Head Coach, Women’s Cross Country
“Ms. Zimmerman’s academic success comes from her excellent native intelligence, her fine background in general education and her willingness to study diligently. She is a credit to the Department of Teacher Education and to the University.”
-Joseph Watras
Professor, Department of Teacher Education |
