DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton softball team (10-13) split with the Detroit Titans in its home-opening doubleheader at UD Softball Stadium on Tuesday. Dayton lost 5-3 in game one, and beat Detroit 5-1 in game two.
Senior
Lauren Nacke hit .571 (4-for-7) and had a double and an RBI. Junior
Kathleen Maloof also hit .571 (4-for-7) with a double, a home run and two RBI. Junior
Leah Sitter and redshirt freshman
Jordan Jennings each doubled. Sophomore
Kasi Vazquez belted a home run and had two RBI. Sophomore Alsyha Isaacson had two RBI for UD.
Senior
Sarah Wedel is 5-2 after earning a win on Tuesday. Wedel pitched five innings and had two strikeouts while allowing one earned run. Freshman
Kayla English pitched two innings of relief. English had three strikeouts and did not surrender a run or walk. Junior Sydney CIcchetti had four strikeouts in four innings pitched. Isaacson pitched three innings and allowed three earned runs.
Detroit struck first in game one. Sara Cupp grounded out driving home Alysaa Schaub for a one run lead. In the third inning, Vanessa Garcia hit a two-run base hit to give the Titans a 3-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the third inning, Isaacson batted home Nacke on a sacrifice fly. UD tied the game at three apiece in the fifth inning. Sophomore
Jenna Lopes batted home Nacke and Isaacson brought home Senior
Megan Barrett.
In the top of the seventh inning, Detroit blasted a two-run home run to take the decisive 5-3 lead.
Dayton took control in game two scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. With the bases loaded, Nacke singled home Isaacson. In the next at-bat Vazquez drove home Maloof.
The Titans put up its lone run in the second game on a base hit to left field.
Vazquez hit a solo home run in the bottom of the third inning. In the fourth inning, it was Maloof’s turn as she cleared the left-center field wall for two runs. Maloof’s two-run shot helped Dayton top Detroit 5-1.
The Flyers open their Atlantic 10 schedule at UD Softball Stadium on Saturday in a doubleheader against the St. Bonaventure Bonnies beginning at Noon.
