13 FLYER ROWERS NAMED CRCA 2012 SCHOLAR ATHLETES

DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton rowing team had a program record 13 student-athletes named to the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete list.

The 13 Flyers named were Michele Baeder, Nicole Baeder, Katherine Bruening, Elizabeth Eckstein, Catherine Hocin, Lauren Jabir, Kerri Kramer, Haley Murrell, Erin Quinn, Sierra Schmitt, Alexandra Van Loon, Jordan Vellky and Sadie Wonders.

Four Flyers, Michele and Nicole Baeder, Bruening and Quinn, earned the honor for the second time in their UD careers.

In May 2012, the Baeders, Bruening, Hocin, Quinn and Schmitt graduated from the University of Dayton.

Michele and Nicole Baeder both hail from Dublin, Ohio. Michele earned 2011 Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team honors, had a 3.8 grade point average and graduated with a degree in pre-physical therapy. Nicole had a 3.7 GPA and majored in marketing.

Bruening, a Beachwood, Ohio native, graduated from UD with a 3.77 GPA with a pre-medicine degree. She is a two-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection and has been a member of the Varsity 8 the previous three seasons. Bruening is also a two-time member (2010 & 2011) of the A-10 All-Academic Team.

Hocin majored at UD as an Intervention Specialist and closed her career with a 3.62 GPA. She was also a member of Dayton's Varsity 8 this season.

Quinn was one of three Flyers named to the 2011 Atlantic 10 All-Academic team. Serving as a team captain, the Fort Wayne, Ind. native majored in history and finished with a cumulative GPA of 3.82. Quinn was  a member of Dayton’s Varsity 8 that won the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship.

Schmitt majored in photography and finished with a 3.5 GPA. She competed for the Flyers in the Varsity 4 this season.

The Flyer juniors earning the CRCA Scholar-Athlete honors included: had Eckstein, Jabir,Kramer and Wonders.

Wonders is a two-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection as well. The Bronson, Mich., native was a First Team selection in 2011 and earned a Second Team spot in 2012. Wonders is an Accounting major, a three-year member of the Varsity 8,  and part of the crew that won the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship.

Eckstein, a Camden, S.C. native, was a member of UD’s Second Varsity 8. She majors in marketing and has a 3.5 GPA.

Jabir hails from Bellbrook, Ohio and is also a member of the Second Varsity 8. She showcases a 3.75 GPA and majors in early childhood education. Kramer, a member of Dayton’s Varsity 8 that won the 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship, majors in mechanical engineering with a 3.6 GPA.

Murrell, VanLoon and Vellky represented the Dayton sophomore class on the CRCA Scholar-Athlete list. Murrell came to UD from Toledo and possesses a 3.85 GPA while majoring in dietetics. VanLoon, a Morris Plains, N.J. native, has a 3.83 GPA in international studies and Spanish. Vellky, a Dublin, Ohio native, majors in biology and has a 3.57 GPA.

Murrell and Vellky were members of the Second Varsity 8; VanLoon rowed in the Varsity 4.

To qualify a student-athlete must be in her at least her second year of eligibility, rowed in her institution's NCAA or IRA eligible boat(s) for a minimum of 75 percent of the current spring races and had a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for her career.
