Former University of Dayton standout basketball player Chris Johnson signed a 10-day contract with the NBA's Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday.
The 2012 Dayton graduate was averaging 12.6 points and 4.0 rebounds with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the NBA’s Development League. He also saw time in the Clippers, Magic and 76ers training camps.
Johnson joins fellow UD alum and current New Orleans Hornets rookie guard Brain Roberts in the NBA. This marks the first time that two Flyers are on NBA rosters since the 1993-94 season when Sedric Toney was on the Cleveland Cavaliers roster and Negele Knight was playing for the San Antonio Spurs.
The 6-foot-6 forward played in 138 games during his Flyer career, the most in Dayton basketball history. He scored 1,467 points, 21st in UD history, including averaging a career-high 12.4 points per game during the 2011-12 season.
Johnson is the only college basketball player in the last 20 years to have 1,400 points, 800 rebounds, 300 offensive rebounds and 200 three-pointers while shooting at least 80 percent from the line.
The UD star is expected to join Memphis for their home game Wednesday against the Los Angeles Lakers. The Grizzlies, 26-14, sport the NBA’s fifth best record.
