CINCINNATI – Vee Sanford led the Dayton Flyers with 16 points, but it wasn’t enough in a 66-61 loss to the Xavier Musketeers.
Kevin Dillard scored all 12 of his points in the second half and added four rebounds and five assists. Matt Derenbecker hit three shots from beyond the arc to finish with nine points.
Dayton dropped to 12-8 overall and 2-4 in the Atlantic 10. The Flyers have not won at Xavier since Jan. 10, 1981, a span of 28 consecutive games.
Dyshawn Pierre converted a three to put the Flyers ahead for the first time in the second half 59-58 with less than three minutes to play.
After a putback layup by the Musketeers, Jalen Robinson had a hook shot go in with 1:22 to go giving UD a one-point advantage.
The Musketeers answered right back and regained the lead 62-61 with 59.4 remaining. Dillard missed a shot to put UD ahead with 32.2 to go.
Trailing by one with less than 30 seconds to play, the Musketeers missed the front end of the one-and-one twice, only to get the offensive rebound. That allowed XU on its third try at the charity stripe to know them both down and take a three-point advantage.
Derenbecker had a shot to tie with two seconds remaining, but his three-pointer rolled in and out.
The Flyers shot the ball well hitting 48 percent of their field goals and 8-of-16 from beyond the arc.
However, Xavier dominated on the glass out-rebounding UD 36-18. Dayton came into the game leading the A-10 in rebounding margin at plus 12.5 during conference play.
Sanford finished the game 8-of-13 from the field. Devin Oliver tallied eight points and six rebounds.
Dayton’s next contest will be on the road when the Flyers face the Saint Louis Billikens on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET. The game will be nationally televised on the NBC Sports Network.
