DUQUESNE DEFEATS VOLLEYBALL, 3-1, SATURDAY IN PITTSBURGH

Loiars Tallies 13 Kills to Lead Flyers

PITTSBURGH - The University of Dayton volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (18-25, 25-16, 17-25, 21-25) decision at Duquesne Saturday night at DU's Palumbo Center. Sophomore Jill Loiars led the Flyer attack with 13 kills and senior Megan Campbell added 10 kills as well for UD. Dayton falls to 10-11 overall and 4-5 in Atlantic 10 play while Duquesne improves to 14-8 on the season and 8-1 in league action.

The Flyers had three players with double-digit digs, including sophomore Janna Krafka with 18, junior Rachel Jones with 14 and senior Allyson Morey with 13. Sophomore Jenna Jendryk narrowly missed the double-double with 36 assists and nine digs.

Trailing one, 6-5, in the first set, Dayton gave up two straight points before benefitting from back-to-back Duquesne errors. A 4-1 Duke run stretched the advantage to six, 14-8, and the DU lead was again six at 18-12. The Flyers pulled to within three at 18-15, but the Duke lead was 24-17 at set point.

The Flyers forced six ties in the early going of the second set, including at 6-6 on a kill from sophomore Angel Agu. A double block from Campbell and junior Isolde Hannan set the score at 9-8, the Flyers the one-point lead. Loiars' kill pushed the UD advantage to three, 12-9, and Brown served up an ace to stretch it to four.

Dayton led seven, 17-10, after a 4-0 Flyer run and then by eight, 19-11, following a Duquesne attack error. The Dukes rattled off three straight points to cut into the Flyer lead but served up an error to give UD sideout. DU called for timeout out trailing seven, 21-14. The Flyers reached set point at 24-16 on the strength of a Jendryk kill and picked up the second-set win on another kill from Jendryk, 25-16, to even the match at one set apiece.

Three Duquesne errors fueled a 5-1 start to the third set for Dayton. The Dukes battled back and DU's 7-0 run set the score at 9-6 with the Flyers trailing by three. A 4-1 UD run pulled the Flyers to within four, 17-13, but the deficit was seven, 21-14, after an Allison Foschia kill. The Dukes held set point at 24-17 and sealed the win with a strong swing from Madelyn Burnham.

After falling behind 2-0 in the fourth set, the Flyers rallied for a 4-1 run to overtake the lead, 4-3. The momentum shifted in favor of Duquesne as the Dukes put together four consecutive points, earning the 8-5 advantage. It was Dayton's turn for a momentum swing as the Flyers again used a 4-1 run, this time evening the frame at nine points each.

The two squads shared nine more ties before the Dukes were able to go up two at 20-18, forcing the Flyers into a timeout. Out of the break, UD earned sideout but DU was able to score two-straight points, taking the 22-19 lead. The Flyers' called for their second timeout of the set trailing 23-20, and the Dukes were able to hold on for the 25-21 fourth-set victory to take the match, 3-1.

Duquesne was led by Foschia with a match-high 14 kills to go with 13 digs for the game's only double-double. Sammy Kline passed a match-high 28 digs and Mary Henry set 47 assists for the Dukes.

The Flyers return to action next weekend with another two-match road swing. Dayton will square off against George Washington in the nation's capital on Friday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Nov. 2, UD will face George Mason in Fairfax, Va., at 7 p.m. as well.
