WASHIGTON, D.C. - University of Dayton volleyball was eliminated by Duquesne, 3-1 (17-25, 20-25, 25-20, 21-25), in the semifinal round of the 2013 Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship. Senior Megan Campbell tallied a match-high 15 kills and sophomore Alaina Turner posted the Flyers only double-double with 10 kills and 15 digs.
Dayton moves to 15-13 on the season while Duquesne improves to 19-9 overall.
Also for the Flyers, senior Shayne Brown recorded 13 kills while hitting at a .440 clip for the match and sophomore Jenna Jendryk set a match-high 43 assists. Sophomore Janna Krafka got under 23 digs and junior Isolde Hannan and Turner each had four kills for UD.
Dayton fell behind 3-0 to Duquesne in the first set but even the frame at three-all after three straight kills. The Duke lead was six, 11-5, after a 4-0 Duquesne run but Hannan stopped the rally with a kill. Jendryk served up an ace followed by back-to-back Flyer kills from Brown and Loiars to shave the advantage to two, 11-9. Turner picked up a kill for Dayton's 13th point and the lead was only one, 15-14, after a Duquesne ball-handling error.
Marah Farage capped off a 3-0 spurt for the Dukes with a kill to stretch the lead back out to four, 19-15, and the Flyers called for timeout. Duquesne reached set point at 24-17 and earned the first-set win with a kill from Madelynn Burnham.
The Flyers opened the second frame with a double block from Hannan and Turner and Brown laid down the kill on the next point. Turner's early kill gave UD the 3-1 lead and her service ace put the Flyers up three, 6-3. The Dukes battled back, taking over the lead with a 5-0 run, 8-6. A Campbell kill stopped the run and Loiars evened the set again, this time at eight points apiece. Duquesne went up five, 15-10, but Brown put down back-to-back kills to set the score at 15-12.
The Duke lead was seven when Duquesne recorded its 20th point of the second set at 20-13. Campbell tallied four straight kills followed by a dump from Jendryk to cut into the DU advantage, 21-18, as the Dukes called for a timeout. A kill from Loiars pulled Dayton to within one, 21-20, to extend the Flyer run to 7-1. The Dukes were able to answer by rattling off the last five points of the frame to take the second set, 25-20, for the 2-0 match lead.
Brown and Hannan opened the third set with an assisted block for the Flyers and another UD block gave Dayton a 4-2 lead. The Dukes were able to tie it at five points apiece but Jendryk recorded a kill and then served up an ace to put Dayton up two, 8-6. Duquesne scored three straight but Loiars stopped the run with a kill off the Dukes' block. Brown picked up her ninth kill of the evening and the score was 11-10 for the Flyers. A Campbell-Jendryk double block brought the two squads even again at 13 and Brown's ensuing ace restored the Flyer lead.
A 4-0 Duke run put Duquesne on top, 18-16, and Dayton signaled for a break. Out of the timeout, the Flyers rallied for a 6-1 run to turn the tables in favor of Dayton, 22-19. Brown's kill set the score at 23-20 and a Duke attack error gave UD set point. Turner kept the Flyers alive with a kill to win the set, 25-20.
Two kills and two blocks opened the fourth set for the Flyers and two more kills and an ace put UD up 7-1, forcing the Duke timeout. Turner's strong swing stretched the Dayton lead to eight, 10-2, but Duquesne cut the lead back to four, 12-8. The Flyers held a 13-8 advantage when Jendryk had to be helped off the court due to injury and when play resumed the Dukes used a 7-1 run to take their first lead of the set at 15-14.
Hannan stopped the run with a kill, Brown tied it at 16-16 and Turner gave the Flyers the 17-16 lead. The two squads were tied at 17 and 18 but Duquesne made it to 20 with a two-point lead. Back-to-back Campbell kills got the Flyers to within one, 21-20, but the Dukes reached match point on a UD attack error, 24-21. Duquesne claimed the fourth set on the next point and took the match, 3-1.
The Dukes were led by Burnham with 15 kills, one of four players with double-digit kills. Patti Abshire passed a match-high 27 digs and Mary Henry set 38 assists for Duquesne.
Dayton will close out the 2013 season on Friday, Nov. 29 with a final match at home against Bowling Green. First serve is set for 7 p.m. for Alumni Reunion night.
