DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team took on the Rockets of Toledo on Tuesday and fell to the visitors from the north, 6-1.
Toledo jumped on Dayton early, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning.
The Flyers were held hitless until the fourth inning when designated hitter Kevin Colburn singled to center.
The score remained 4-0 in favor of the Rockets until the bottom of the eighth when Dayton got its first run of the game. Junior Mark Podlas singled to lead off the inning, moved around thanks to wild pitches by Toledo, and scored on freshman Aaron Huesman’s RBI single to center.
The Flyers were within three runs heading into the last inning of play, but the Rockets pulled back within four at 5-1. Toledo went on to add another run to make it a 6-1 contest.
Starter Joe Wahl (0-2) picked up the loss for Dayton after allowing four runs in the first inning, but settled in after that, recording five strikeouts and no walks.
Offensively, Huesman added the lone RBI for the Flyers while Podlas went 2-for-3 on the day.
The Flyers (3-9-1) will stay at home to host the Flyer Classic this weekend with games against Buffalo and Oakland starting Friday.
