Box Score KINGSTON, R.I. – The University of Dayton men's soccer team traveled to Rhode Island Sunday and suffered a tough 1-0 loss after allowing a goal in the 94 minute.
The battle for the top spot in the conference was on the line as the Rams led the Atlantic 10 going in with a 3-0 record while the Flyers were 2-0-1.
The first half saw few attempts from both teams as Dayton totaled four shots, two of which were on goal, and Rhode Island recorded five shots, two on goal as well. The defenses held strong and made quality opportunities hard to come by.
The teams combined for 14 fouls by the halftime break with both coaches looking to make adjustments for the second 45 minutes.
The second half had a similar style of play as the first half with the defenses controlling the tempo of the game.
The Flyers increased their shot total to 11 and put four on target, but neither team was able to score the decisive goal in regulation. Dayton was going to overtime for the fifth time this season.
Rhode Island was quick to strike in overtime and scored the game-winner in the 94
th minute, handing Dayton its first conference loss of the season, 1-0.
The Flyers finished the game with 12 shots, four of which were on goal, compared to the Rams' 10 shots. Junior goalkeeper
Chris Froschauer recorded three saves in the game. Offensively, sophomore
Rafael Gamboa led the way with four shot attempts.
"I thought the team played very well today against a very strong Rhode Island team that has a lot of momentum," said Head Coach
Dennis Currier. "The game was tight from start to finish and it became obvious that one goal would determine the winner. Unfortunately, we did not defend a set piece well enough in overtime and that was the difference of the match."
The Flyers (6-4-3, 2-1-1 A-10) will return home to host Saint Louis next Saturday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.
