DAYTON -- The University of Dayton football team hits the road for the final time in 2014 on Saturday, Nov. 15 when the Flyers renew their rivalry with the Butler Bulldogs. Game time at the Butler Bowl is 11 a.m. ET.
(There is no truth to the rumor that in honor of the morning start the stadium is being renamed the Cereal Bowl for just one day.)
Dayton is 6-3 on the season and 4-2 in the Pioneer Football League, while Butler is 4-6 and 2-5 in the PFL.Â
Dayton is led by senior running back
Connor Kacsor, who has been named to The Sports Network's Walter Payton Award Watch List. The Payton Award goes annually to the top offensive player in FCS football.
Dayton's win against Valparaiso on Nov. 1 clinched the Flyers' 37th winning season in the last 38 years.Â
Â
STREAKING
UD has not been shut out in a school-record 429 straight games, the best such active string in all of college football. The last team to shut out the Flyers was Marshall, 9-0, on Oct. 16, 1976. That is also the all-time FCS record.
SERIES STUFF
• Dayton leads the series 26-12-1, but has not won in the last three meetings between the two teams.Â
• In the last game between the two schools, Butler beat UD 33-30 at Welcome Stadium on Nov. 2.
• The Flyers led the game at halftime 27-13 before suffering a key injury to quarterback
Will Bardo and losing running back
Connor Kacsor in the first half. UD tied the game 30-30 with 8:12 to go after 24 unanswered points by Butler, but the 'Dogs kicked what turned out to be the game-winning field goal with 3:29 left and held on for the win.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
• Ninth-year coach Jeff Voris' team has lost four of its last five games.
• The Butler defense leads the PFL in rushing defense per game (108.9).
• The rushing defense is bolstered by 23 sacks.
• Defensive back and JoJo Ciancio leads the team and is ninth in the PFL in tackles per game (7.6).
• Quarterback Matt Shiltz is 106 of 171 passing (.62) for 1,324 yards and ten TD's in 2014.
600 CLUB
• The Flyers became the 11th NCAA FCS team (and the first west of the Alleghenies) to win 600 games in its football history when UD beat Davidson on October 18, 2008.
• Here are the 15 members of the club, heading into the 2014 season: Yale (876), Harvard (838), Penn (828), Princeton (799), Delaware (668), Dartmouth (668), Lehigh (668), Lafayette (664), North Dakota State (657), Dayton (641), Cornell (632), Northern Iowa (632), North Dakota (620), Colgate (620) and Holy Cross (609).
• Of the 600 Club members, Dayton has played the fewest seasons (105, nine fewer than Northern Iowa's 114).
TO REALLY SERVE AND PROTECT
Backup center
Patrick Nuzzolese is a volunteer firefighter when he is home in Port Washington, N.Y. on Long Island. He celebrated his third anniversary with his "other team" last April.
GOOD HANDS PEOPLE
• The Dayton receiving corps returned quantity and quality from 2013. Back are starters at three of the four spots from a year ago, plus three seniors as backups who played extensively due to injuries. All told, six Flyer receivers had starting experience coming into the season.
ROSS SMITH
•
Ross Smith has 101 catches since 2012, with 35 (11.9 avg.) in 2013.Â
• This year, he leads UD in receptions (46, already eleven more than 2014), yards (527), and receiving touchdowns (5). He averages 11.46 yards a catch.
• Smith had three receptions for 33 yards vs. Georgetown, and four for 68 at Duquesne. He also caught six passes for 76 yards and a score against Robert Morris.
• Smith had a then career-high eight receptions for 114 yards at Davidson.
• He led the team against Marist with five catches for 49 yards and a touchdown.
• At San Diego, he raised his personal best to nine catches for 64 yards.
• Against Valparaiso, Smith had 5 receptions for 41 yards and a score.
• Smith has at least one catch in 29 straight games.
