NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Dayton baseball team picked up its first win of the weekend on Sunday with a 4-1 victory over Belmont.
"Charlie (Dant) wanted the ball today and he wanted it until the end," said head coach
Tony Vittorio. "He pitched well and the guys defended behind him."
Dayton had started off the Mule Mix Classic with tough losses at Middle Tennessee State and Lipscomb, but the Flyers redeemed themselves with a win over the Bruins.
Both teams utilized their strong defense and effective pitching to held opposing batters in check throughout the early stages of the contest.
Neither team was able to make a dent in the score through the first four innings of play.
The Flyers finally broke open the game in the fifth inning with a pair of runs. Senior
Kuris Duggan and junior
Greg Rhude both had RBI groundouts to put Dayton up 2-0 at the midway point in the contest.
Dayton added to its lead in the sixth with a sacrifice fly by junior AJ Ryan to push the Flyers' advantage to 3-0.
Belmont was able to get on the board in the bottom seventh with a single run, making it a 3-1 ball game.
The Flyers got the run back in the ninth when senior
Robby Sunderman stole third, then scored on an error by the Belmont pitcher.
The Bruins attempted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth, but a double-play ended the Belmont rally, giving Dayton the 4-1 victory.
Starting pitcher
Charlie Dant (2-0) had a phenomenal performance and was awarded the win after tossing a complete game, allowing just one run and striking out seven. It was the first complete game of Dant's career.
Offensively, Dayton was led by
Zach Schira and Rhude, who both had two hits in the game. Ryan and Rhude also provided the RBI. The Flyers totaled nine hits in the contest and allowed just seven to Belmont.
With the win, Dayton ended a two-game skid.              Â
The Flyers (3-3) will return home to host Bowling Green at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the first home game of the 2014 season.
