DAYTON LOSES TO RICHMOND IN 10 INNINGS

Box Score
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team battled the Richmond Spiders Saturday to a close decision, but the visitors came out on top with a two-run home run in the 10th.

The Flyers opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly by junior Alex Harris, plating senior Robby Sunderman from third.

Dayton doubled its advantage in the third with an RBI single by junior Sergio Plasencia to right, making it a 2-0 ball game.

Richmond got both runs back in the fifth to tie the game up at 2-2. Both of those runs were unearned after a Dayton error.

The starting pitchers for the Flyers and Spiders  both settled in after that and neither team was able to produce a run in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings.

Relief pitcher Nick Weybright came in with two runners on in the ninth and struck out both batters he faced to end the Richmond threat.

Dayton put a pair of runners on in the bottom of the ninth with nobody out, looking for someone to step up with the game-winner for the Flyers. Unfortunately, UD did not get the hit it needed and the game went into extra innings.

In the top of the 10th, the Spiders got a two-run home run to take the 4-2 lead. That would be the fateful hit as the Flyer fell to Richmond, 4-2.

UD starter Noah Buettgen had a season-best outing, going 8 1/3 innings with five strikeouts, one walk, and no earned runs allowed. Both runs the junior gave up were unearned. Weybright (0-1) suffered the loss after giving up the home run in the 10th.

As a team, Dayton totaled six hits including a 3-for-4 outing with two runs from Sunderman. Plasencia and Harris provided the RBI for UD as well.

The Flyers (6-14, 1-1 A10) will finish up their series with Richmond on Sunday with a 12 p.m. start time.
