DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton baseball team finished up its series with Richmond on Sunday with a 10-9 win over the Spiders in a 10-inning contest.
The Flyers were looking to take a series win after splitting the first two games of the weekend. UD jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a two-run single by junior
Zach Schira.
Richmond was able to get on the board in the second with a single run, unearned.
Dayton scored two more runs in the third to make it a 4-1 lead for the hosts. Schira picked up his third RBI of the game with a single to center before sophomore
Aaron Huesman scored on a Richmond error.
The Spiders scored three runs in the fifth alone to tie the game back up at 4-4. A Dayton error extended the inning and allowed Richmond to score the tying run, which was unearned.
The Flyers gave up another three runs in the sixth to give the Spiders their first lead of the contest, 7-4. Before the inning was done, Richmond scored two more to extend their advantage to five runs.
Dayton's offense stalled in the middle stages of the game as the Flyers trailed the Spiders 9-4 going into the final two innings.
The Flyers woke up in the eighth with an RBI double by Sunderman to left, scoring junior
Greg Rhude. Junior
Alex Harris followed up with a two-run double to left to make it a9-7 ball game. Junior AJ Ryan pulled Dayton within one with an RBI single to center, plating Harris from second. Schira then finished off the inning with an RBI single to right, tying the game up at 9-9.
No damage was done in the ninth and for the second straight game as the Flyers and Spiders went into extra-innings.
Richmond was held in check in the top of the 10
th, giving Dayton one more say in how the game was decided.
Alex Harris singled to lead off the inning, then was bunted to second by redshirt-freshman
Glenn Jones. A wild pitch put Harris on third with just one out. Senior
Ryan Berry then approached the plate and launched a fly ball down the right field line. The ball carried the fielder into foul territory for the catch, but it was deep enough for Harris to score easily from third.
That would be the fateful run as Dayton took a 10-9 victory from the Spiders and two of three games in the series.

Charlie Dant went five innings and gave up seven runs, five earned in the start for the Flyers before giving way to the bullpen. Senior
Nate Harris and sophomore
Jack Rose pitched middle relief for Dayton as well.
Freshman
Garrett Atkinson (W, 1-1) had a season-long outing against the Spiders, going 3 1/3 shutout innings with just one hit allowed and four strikeouts.
Dayton wracked-up 14 hits in the game, including four from
Alex Harris, three from Schira, and two from Sunderman and Ryan. Schira drove in four runs for UD while Harris scored four times.
The Flyers (7-14, 2-1 A10) will next host Baldwin-Wallace on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Woerner Field.
