FAIRBORN, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team opened up the 2014 Dayton-Wright State Classic on Friday with an 8-4 loss to co-host Wright State.
Wright State jumped out to an early lead with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the first, including a solo home run in the second pitch of the at-bat.
Dayton got a run back in the top of the second with a single run when junior
Zach Schira scored on a throwing error by the Raider catcher. Schira had singled to lead off the inning, stole second, before moving to third on a wild pitch.
The Flyers closed the gap further in the third with two more runs. The first came on senior
Robby Sunderman's RBI single, scoring junior
Greg Rhude from second. Schira then added an RBI by drawing a hit-by-pitch with the bases-loaded. That made it a 5-3 ball game heading into the bottom of the third.
The Raiders got the runs back and then some in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs on three hits and a passed ball. That extended Wright State's lead back to five at 8-3.
Neither team added to its tally in the fourth and fifth innings, as Dayton started to run out of at-bats for its comeback attempt.
The Flyers managed to strike again the sixth with senior
Ryan Berry's solo home run to left-center. UD pulled within four, 8-4.
Unfortunately, Dayton was not able to overcome the early deficit and suffered an 8-4 loss to the Raiders.
Starter
Noah Buettgen (1-2) had a decent outing besides the two big innings by Wright State, giving up eight runs, seven earned, on 11 hits. All eight runs came in the first and third innings. Sophomore
Jack Rose had a perfect inning in relief in the eighth.
Dayton racked-up six hits in the contest, with RBI coming from Schira, Sunderman and Berry. All six hits came from different batters for UD.
The Flyers (3-7) will return to action at Nischwitz Stadium on Saturday as they host Bradley at 1 p.m.
