COACH VITTORIO EARNS 400TH CAREER WIN AT DAYTON

Box Score
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team completed the series sweep of Rhode Island on Sunday with a 9-5 win and gave head coach Tony Vittorio win No. 400 at Dayton.

In his 15th season at the helm, Coach Vittorio has won 400 games, a regular season Atlantic 10 title, and a A-10 tournament championship.

Dayton opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second on an RBI groundout by senior Kuris Duggan, which scored junior AJ Ryan and put the Flyers up 1-0.

Rhode Island answered in the third with an RBI single, evening the score at 1-1.

The Flyers took the lead once again in the fourth with a sacrifice fly by senior Robby Sunderman. Duggan then scored when redshirt freshman Glenn Jones stole second and the throw down sailed over the shortstops head for an error, allowing Jones and Duggan to advance. That put Dayton up 3-1.

In the fifth inning, the Flyers added to their lead with three more runs, thanks to a two-run double by sophomore Aaron Huesman and a sacrifice fly by junior Greg Rhude. Dayton held a 6-1 advantage over the Rams.

Rhode Island got a run back in the top of the sixth to make it 6-2. The Rams went on to get three more runs in the eighth, cutting the deficit to just one at 6-5.

Ryan ripped an RBI double to right field in the bottom of the eighth to help give Dayton more room with a 7-5 lead. A wild pitch allowed pinch runner Zach Schira to score, putting the flyers back up three. Huesman added a sacrifice fly to right which plated Ryan and cancelled out the three-run inning for Rhode Island.

The Flyers held off the Rams in the ninth and earned Coach Vittorio his 400th career win at Dayton.

Starter Charlie Dant (4-3) tossed seven innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on 10 hits. Sophomore Nick Weybright (S, 2) picked up the save after pitching two shutout innings out of the bullpen.

Huesman led the Dayton offense with three RBI and two hits, while Jones also added a two-hit game. Sunderman, Ryan, Rhude, and Duggan contributed RBI as well.

The Flyers (16-17, 8-4 A-10) will host Ohio at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Woerner Field.
