Box Score DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton Baseball team struggled to keep the St. Bonaventure bats in check Saturday and the Flyers fell, 13-4.
The Flyers were looking to rebound from their tough 10-9 loss to the Bonnies on Friday and hoped to stifle the SBU bats on Saturday.
Starting pitcher
Noah Buettgen had a scare in the first inning when a line drive came right back to the mound and deflected off Buettgen into left. He remained in the game however and recorded the final out of the inning.
St. Bonaventure opened up the scoring in the second with a pair of runs on three hits, including two doubles.
The Bonnies added another run in the third to make it a 3-0 ball game.
Redshirt freshman
Glenn Jones put Dayton on the board in the bottom of the third with a solo home run to right, his first of the season. Before the inning was done, junior AJ Ryan went on to add a sacrifice fly to center, scoring senior
Robby Sunderman.
In the top of the fifth, SBU exploded for five runs on five hits to take an 8-2 lead.
Dayton got a run back in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI double by Ryan.
The Bonnies scored their ninth run in the seventh inning, but the Flyers were there to answer once again with a solo home run by Ryan, his third of the season. Dayton still trailed St. Bonaventure however, 9-4.
A three-run home run by SBU in the eighth put the Flyers down eight runs, 12-4. The Bonnies went on to score again in the ninth, putting the game out of reach for Dayton.
In the end, the Bonnies' bats proved to be too much for the Flyer pitching staff and Dayton dropped a 13-4 decision to St. Bonaventure.
Buettgen (5-5) suffered the loss for UD after giving up nine runs, six earned, on 14 hits in seven innings.
Dayton was out-hit in the contest 18-8 and left 11 runners stranded. Ryan had the best day for UD with a 2-for-2 day including three RBI and a home run. Jones added a solo home run as well.
The Flyers (18-22, 9-8 A-10) will finish up their series with St. Bonaventure on Sunday at 12 p.m.
