DAYTON BASEBALL CLINCHES UMASS SERIES WITH 6-2 VICTORY

Box Score
DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team took on Massachusetts in the second game of the series Saturday and recorded a 6-2 win over the Minutemen.

"Noah (Buettgen) really settled in well as the game went along," said head coach Tony Vittorio. "That with us taking advantage of a couple of their mistakes and a couple of timely hits by AJ allowed us to win today."

Both offenses got off to a slow start as the first two innings went by without any runs.

The Flyers were the first to come alive in the top of the third when junior Sergio Plasencia hit a solo shot, giving Dayton the 1-0 lead. The home run was Plasencia's first for the Flyers.

The Minutemen were not far behind though and scored their first runs in the bottom of the third, moving past the Flyers to take a 2-1 advantage.

Dayton answered in the fifth with four runs, taking back the lead. The scoring in the fifth started with a UMass error that allowed seniors Kuris Duggan and Robby Sunderman to score. Junior AJ Ryan then followed that up with a two-run shot to deep right that cleared the fences for his second home run of the season.

In the seventh, Dayton added to its lead with an RBI single by Ryan, scoring senior Ryan Berry from second. That put the Flyers ahead 6-2 heading into the late stages of the contest.

Starter Noah Buettgen (4-3) held the Minutemen offense in check the rest of the game and secured the victory for the Flyers. He finished with a nine-inning complete game, allowing just two runs on five hits. It was the senior pitcher's second complete game of the season and a season-high in strikeouts with six. Eighty-three of Buettgen's 116 pitches were strikes.

Ryan anchored the offense with three RBI and a pair of hits while Huesman and Berry contributed two-hit games as well. As a team, Dayton totaled nine hits, while allowing just five.

The Flyers (12-16, 5-3 A-10) will finish up their series at UMass Sunday with a 12 p.m. start time.
