DAYTON BASEBALL DROPS SERIES FINALE AT UMASS, 5-4

Box Score
AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Dayton baseball team finished up its series at Massachusetts Sunday with a narrow 5-4 loss to the Minutemen.

After winning the first two games of the series, Dayton looked for the sweep on Sunday, but host UMass was able to score the crucial run in the ninth to walk off with the victory.

The Flyers didn't take long to jump out to an early lead as junior AJ Ryan hit an RBI single to center in the top of the first, scoring junior Alex Harris for Dayton's first run of the game.

UMass scored in the bottom of the first to tie the game up at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly.

Dayton pulled ahead once again in the top of the fifth when Harris scored on an error by the Minutemen.

In the bottom of the fifth, UMass responded by scoring on a wild pitch to tie the contest again at 2-2.

Ryan produced another clutch hit in the seventh with two outs, scoring Harris and giving Dayton a 3-2 advantage.

In the top of the eighth, Harris extended Dayton's lead to two runs with an RBI single of his own to right.

The Minutemen hung right there with the Flyers though and scored twice in the bottom half of the frame to even the score at 4-4.

It would be UMass that would score the deciding run though in the ninth on an RBI single with the bases loaded to end the game, 5-4.

Starter Charlie Dant went 7 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking none, but did not get the decision. Reliever Nick Weybright (1-3) was saddled with the loss after allowing the final run in the ninth.

Dayton managed to out-hit the Minutemen 11-10 in the contest and benefited from three UMass errors. Ryan led the way for UD with two RBI and a 3-for-5 outing while Harris went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI.

The Flyers (12-17, 5-4 A-10) will take on in-state foe Ohio State at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Columbus.
