Box Score DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team battled in-state foe Ohio State on Wednesday and took home an 8-5 win over the Buckeyes, thanks to strong pitching and 12 hits.
"It was a great team win," said head coach
Tony Vittorio. "Overall, we had really good at-bats. We had three freshmen in the line-up who all competed well in (Nick) Gobert, (Matt) Poland, and (Glenn) Jones."
The Flyers took an early lead in the top of the first, despite having two outs as a Buckeye fielding error resulted in two unearned runs for Dayton.
In the top of the third, UD added two runs to its lead with back-to-back RBI singles by junior AJ Ryan and sophomore
Aaron Huesman. That put the Flyers ahead 4-0.
The Buckeyes countered in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of their own, closing the gap on Dayton.
The Flyers got the runs back in the fourth with a three-run blast by junior
Alex Harris, his first long shot of the season.
Ohio State scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to make it a 7-5 contest in UD's favor.
In the top of the eighth, the Flyers padded their margin by another run when junior
Sergio Plasencia hit a sacrifice fly to center.
Dayton held off any Ohio State rally and picked up an 8-5 win over the Buckeyes.
