DAYTON BASEBALL TAKES FINAL NON-CONFERENCE GAME FROM AKRON

Box Score
AKRON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team went to Akron on Tuesday and left with a 9-2 victory thanks to a six-run fifth inning.

Neither team was able to make a dent in the score through the first four innings of play as the pitching staffs held the hitters in check.

In the top of the fifth inning, the Dayton offense woke up in dramatic fashion, driving in six runs. The frame started off with a two-run double to right center by senior Robby Sunderman. Then junior Sergio Plasencia added a two-run single to right, plating two more. Junior AJ Ryan followed with an RBI single to center, before junior Alex Harris scored on a wild pitch. That put the Flyers ahead, 6-0.

Akron got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning, making it a 6-2 contest.

The Flyers extended their lead in the top of the ninth with a two-out, two-run double by Ryan, which put Dayton up by six runs. Sophomore Aaron Huesman piled on another run with an RBI double to left, pushing the advantage to 9-2.

That would be all the runs UD would need as the Flyers picked up the win Tuesday.

Starter Brad Burkhart (1-0) earned his first career win at Dayton after giving up just two runs on two hits in 4 2/3 innings of work. Freshman Mark Giesler pitched the next 3 1/3 innings without allowing a single run or walk. Sophomore Nick Weybright tossed a shutout ninth to close out the game.

Ryan led the way with three RBI and a 2-for-5 outing while Sunderman and Plasencia contributed two RBI apiece. Plasencia also had three hits in the game to go with a run scored.

The Flyers (23-26, 13-11 A-10) will finish up the regular season with a three-game series with George Mason this weekend at home.
