Tim Horsmon has announced the complete 2014 schedule. The 30-match slate features a home tournament co-hosted with Wright State over the second weekend of the season as well as the 2014 Atlantic 10 Volleyball Championship to be held Nov. 21-23 at Frericks Center. The Flyers will be squaring off against 2013 NCAA Tournament quarterfinalist Nebraska as well as two other NCAA Championship participants in Duquesne and Morehead State.
The 2014 roster will feature two seniors in
Isolde Hannan and
Rachel Jones in addition to five juniors:
Angel Agu,
Jenna Jendryk,
Jill Loiars,
Alaina Turner and
Janna Krafka. Redshirt freshman
Lauren Gresham will be among a group of six first-year players as five newcomers will be joining the team this summer. The returning players represent 58% of last season's offense as well as 67% of the team's digs and blocks. Loiars is the squad's top returning kills leader with 258 a year ago while Krafka got under 475 digs last season. Hannan (119) and Jendryk (106) are the team's top returning blockers.
This fall will kick off on August 29 as the team is set to participate in Bowling Green's tournament Aug. 29-30 at BGSU's Stroh Center. UD will square off against Pittsburgh, Middle Tennessee and the host Falcons. After opening the season on the road, Dayton will return home to co-host the Flyer-Raider Invitational with Wright State Sept. 5-6. UD will host 2014 NCAA Quarterfinalist Nebraska as well as CSU Bakersfield at Frericks Center while facing Wright State at the Raiders' McLin Gymnasium. A total of 11 matches will be played between the two facilities.
Cleveland will be Dayton's next stop as the team will be playing in Cleveland State's tournament Sept. 12-13 at Woodling Gymnasium. The Flyers will face the Toledo Rockets and the Navy Midshipmen in addition to the host Vikings. In its first mid-week game of the season, Dayton will be renewing its intrastate rivalry with Xavier on Sept. 16, hosting the Musketeers at Frericks Center.
In the team's final non-conference tournament of the fall, Dayton will travel to Hampton, Va., to participate in Hampton's tournament Sept. 19-20 at Holland Hall. Presbyterian, Georgetown and host Hampton will be on tap for UD.
Atlantic 10 Conference play will get underway Sept. 26 and 27 with stops at Duquesne and La Salle. The Flyers will round out the weekend at non-conference foe Penn on Sept. 28. Finally returning home on Oct. 3, UD will host newly added A-10 opponent Davidson followed by Virginia Commonwealth on Oct. 5. Another conference road trip the following weekend for the Flyers will feature stops at George Mason and George Washington.
Stepping out of conference play on Oct. 14, Dayton will play host to Ohio Valley Conference member Morehead State - a NCAA qualifier last season. Oct. 17 and 19 will feature home matches against Fordham and Rhode Island. One last out-of-conference match will be played between Dayton and Eastern Kentucky on Oct. 22 in Richmond, Ky. Wrapping up play in October, Dayton will welcome Saint Louis to Frericks Center on Oct. 25 and will travel to VCU Oct. 31.
On Nov. 2, the Flyers will be in North Carolina for a second chance at Davidson and the following week, UD will be in St. Louis to square off against the Billikens. Dayton will wrap up the 2014 regular season at home with matches against La Salle and Duquesne Nov. 14 and 16.
Frericks Center will be the site of the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship as Dayton is set to host the post-season tournament for the seventh time. The top six teams in league standings will qualify for the championship to be played Nov. 21-23.
