DAYTON FALLS TO FORDHAM IN A-10 ELIMINATION GAME

Box Score
EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The University of Dayton baseball team held a lead late in the game, but dropped a 4-3 decision in extra innings for the second straight game.

After inclement weather in the St. Louis area on Wednesday postponed the final game of the day to Thursday, the Flyers and Rams faced off down the road in Edwardsville, Ill. on the campus of Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.

Both pitching staffs controlled the pace of the game early on with neither team able to make a dent in the score through the first couple of innings.

Fordham broke up the shutout in the bottom of the third with a two-run double to right.

It wouldn't be until the sixth inning that Dayton countered as senior Robby Sunderman hit an RBI single just in front of the center fielder which allowed senior Kuris Duggan to score from third. That pulled the Flyers within one run.

Junior Sergio Plasencia followed up with a sacrifice fly to center, tying the game up at 2-2. Prior to that inning, Fordham had retired 14 straight Dayton batters.

In the top of the 8th, the Flyers put runners on the corners with just one out. Plasencia then recorded his second RBI of the game with a go-ahead double to left. Dayton now had its first lead of the game 3-2.

The Rams were not going away though and evened the score with two outs in the bottom of the ninth via an RBI single to center. The Flyers prevented any further damage and sent the game into extra innings for the second straight contest.

In the 10th inning, it would be the Rams that would record the deciding run, taking a 4-3 lead and ending the Flyers' season.

Starter Noah Buettgen pitched the first 8 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on 10 hits. He had been effective for most of the game, but the junior's pitch count reached well above the 100 pitch mark.

Nick Weybright (2-5) came in to finish the ninth and pitch the 10th, suffering the loss.

Plasencia led the way offensively with two RBI, including the deciding one in the eighth. Sunderman also added a 3-for-5 outing with an RBI. Jones added a two-hit game as well.

The Flyers finish the year with a 24-30 record overall and a 14-13 A-10 mark.
