#UDVB HOLDS ON FOR 3-2 WIN OVER XAVIER

Four Flyers with Double-Digit Kills

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton volleyball team held on for a 3-2 (14-25, 25-19, 25-16, 22-25, 16-14) win over visiting Xavier Tuesday night at Frericks Center. Junior Alaina Turner led the Flyers offensively with 16 kills to go with 14 digs and five service aces for her seventh double-double of the season while freshman Jane Emmenecker set 48 assists and passed 10 digs, her second career double-double.

Also for the Flyers, junior Jill Loiars added 13 kills and five blocks, junior Jenna Jendryk had 12 kills and senior Isolde Hannan was swinging lights out with 10 kills to zero errors on 13 attempts for a .769 hitting percentage and she tallied a match-high eight blocks. Junior Janna Krafka got under a team-high 17 digs.

XU out-hit UD, .236 to .216, and the two squads were even with 59 kills and 10 total blocks each.

Xavier (6-4) opened the match by scoring the first three points of set one but a kill from Turner pulled Dayton (7-3) to within one, 5-4. The Musketeers would score five straight to open a six-point lead, 10-4, and the lead was eight, 15-7, when the Flyers signaled for timeout. The XU advantage was cut to six, 16-10, but Xavier rattled off six points to push its lead to 12, 22-10. The Musketeers reached set point at 24-14 and picked up the frame with a kill from Makayla Agin.

It was a 4-1 start for the Musketeers in the second set but the Flyers rallied to even the frame at six points apiece after a 4-0 run was capped by a Emmenecker-Erhahon block. A kill from Jendryk finished a 3-0 spurt by Dayton to give the Flyers their first lead of the match, 11-10, and the UD lead was two, 14-12, when XU called for a break. The two squads were even at 17 but Dayton took as three-point lead at 20-17 and was up four, 22-18. Jendryk recorded three consecutive kills to close out the set for the Flyers as UD won, 25-19, to even the match at one set apiece.

Emmenecker served up an ace to open the third set but neither team would lead by more than one point until Xavier took the 11-9 advantage on back-to-back kills. The tables turned as Dayton went up 15-12 on a 4-0 run sending Xavier into timeout. Out of the break, the Flyers scored one more before the Musketeers stopped the run. A Flyer setting error set the score at 16-14 in favor of Dayton but UD scored six straight to stretch the advantage to eight, 22-14. The Musketeers faced set point twice before Turner laid down a kill as the Flyers took the set, 25-16, and a 2-1 match advantage.

The Flyers continued their momentum into the fourth set, jumping out to the 6-2 advantage in the early going. The Musketeers battled back to cut the lead to one, 6-5, but the Flyer lead would be four again at 12-8 after consecutive kills from Turner. XU rallied to knot the two teams at 13-all and took its first lead of the set at 14-13 on a kill from Abbey Bessler. Erhahon's kill on the following play kick-started a 3-0 spurt by UD but the frame would be tied again, 18-18.

A 4-1 run for the Musketeers put them up two, 22-20, and the Flyers called for a break. Two XU points later and UD had to call its second timeout of the set trailing by four, 24-20. The Flyers faced set point twice before the Musketeers took the fourth set, 25-22, and even the match at two games each.

Four ties into the deciding set and Xavier is able to take the two-point lead, 6-4, with consecutive kills. Dayton would tie the frame at 7-7 but the two squads would switch sides with Xavier leading by one. A Musketeer service error and an attack error evened the set at 10-10 and the Flyers retook the lead at 12-11 on another XU attack error. Dayton reached match point at 14-12 following yet another Xavier attack error but the Musketeers stayed alive with an assisted block. It took an extra point but Dayton was able to claim the 16-14 win in the fifth set to take the match, 3-2.

The Musketeers were led by Bessler with a match-high 25 kills and 13 digs while Aubree Smith set 39 assists.

The Flyers return to action this weekend with a trip to Jacksonville, Florida, for the Radisson Invitational Sept. 19-20 co-hosted by North Florida and Jacksonville. Dayton's first match of the weekend will be at UNF Arena against Charlotte Friday at 1 p.m.
