DAYTON BASEBALL DEFEATED BY ARMY, 12-6

Box Score
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of Dayton baseball team lost the second game of the weekend at the Spartanburg Classic to Army, 12-6.

The Flyers got off to a fast start as lead-off hitter Glenn Jones tripled to start the game, followed by senior Sergio Plasencia's RBI single to put Dayton up 1-0.

In the bottom of the second, Dayton looked to threaten further by loading the bases with one out, but the Flyers were unable to capitalize, keeping it at a one-run advantage.

UD was able to load the bases again in the third, this time getting the hit they needed. Sophomore Cale Dineen recorded his first hit as a Flyer with a two-run single to left field, giving Dayton the 3-0 lead over the Black Knights.

Army broke up the shutout bid in the top of the fourth with an RBI double of its own. The Knights went on to tie the game up in the fifth inning with a pair of runs, making it 3-3.

Senior A.J. Ryan put the Flyers back on top in the bottom half of the fifth with a solo home run, his second of the season.

In the top of the seventh, Army countered when it scored on a Dayton fielding error. The Knights then took control of the game with four more runs, pulling ahead 8-4.

The Flyers' offense came back alive in the bottom of the seventh when Dineen drove in his third run of the game with a double to left. Senior Zach Schira then scored on a wild pitch, making it an 8-5 game in Army's favor.

A pair of Dayton wild pitches allowed two more runs for the Black Knights, extending the gap to four runs.

In the end, the Flyers were unable to mount a full comeback and fell to Army, 12-6.

Dayton totaled 10 hits in the game while giving up 15 to Army. Dineen had a breakout game with a 3-for-4 outing and three RBI. Plasencia added two hits, two runs, and an RBI with Ryan contributing the other RBI.

Starting pitcher Charlie Dant (0-1) pitched six innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits while striking out three. Freshman reliever Danny Hentz came on in the seventh as well as fellow newcomer Mason Kutruff. Reshirt freshman Jason Johnson and freshman Ben Polansky also saw action on Saturday in the late stages of the contest.

The Flyers (0-2) will finish up the Spartanburg Classic on Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest at Wofford.
