DAYTON BASEBALL FALLS IN 14 INNINGS TO NKU

Box Score
XENIA, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team battled Northern Kentucky University for 14 innings before dropping a 10-8 decision.

The Norse took the initial lead in the top of the second with four runs, three of which were unearned thanks to a Dayton fielding error.

The Flyers got a run back in the bottom of the fourth when senior A.J. Ryan ripped an RBI single to right, scoring senior Sergio Plasencia from third.

NKU added a run to their advantage in the fifth with a single run, making it a 5-1 contest.

Dayton was not done however and closed the gap further in the bottom half of the inning though with a two-run home run by sophomore Glenn Jones, his second of the season.

The Flyers threatened further in the seventh by loading the bases with one out. Plasencia struck for UD with an RBI single to center, making it a one-run game. Senior Alex Harris followed up with an RBI single of his own, tying the game up at 5-5.

With the bases still loaded, NKU went to the bullpen, but a wild pitch allowed Jones to score and put Dayton on top 6-5. Sophomore Cale Dineen made it a two-run game with a sacrifice fly, capping off a four-run inning for the Flyers.

Dayton got an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to make it an 8-5 ball game.

NKU scored three times in the top of the ninth to even the score at 8-8 with some late-game heroics of its own. That forced extra innings between the Flyers and the Norse.

It wasn't until the 14th inning that either team was able to strike, but it was the visiting Norse that would score twice to take the 10-8 lead.

Dayton was unable to answer in the bottom half of the inning and fell to NKU, 10-8.

As a team, UD racked up 13 hits compared to the Norse' 16 hits. Harris led the way with a 3-for-5 outing, a double, and an RBI while Jones and Plasencia chipped in two RBI apiece. Nine different Flyers recorded a hit in the contest.

Freshman Mason Kutruff made his first career start as a Flyer and gave up five runs on seven hits while striking out six in five inning on the mound. Closer Sam Brunner lost the save opportunity after giving up three runs in the top of the ninth. Reliever Eric Ashbrook (L, 0-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up the deciding runs in the 14th innings.

The Flyers (5-9) will host Ball State at home in a three-game series starting Saturday at 3 p.m.
