Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Dayton baseball team dropped a 5-3 decision to the University of Kentucky on Tuesday after three separate weather delays and a shortened game.
The Flyers (14-28) trailed the Wildcats (25-15) throughout the contest, but made a late surge that was stopped because of lightning.
There was over an hour lightning delay at the start of the bottom of the third inning and another hour and 23 minute delay in the middle of the fifth. The game was halted again with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and was not resumed.
SCORING BREAKDOWN
- Bottom of 1st – Kentucky scored in the opening frame with an RBI groundout to second after a double put UK in scoring position. Dayton 0, Kentucky 1
- Bottom of 2nd – The Wildcats doubled their lead with a solo home run to lead off the second. A bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly made it a four-run game. Dayton 0, Kentucky 4
- Top of 4th- Dayton got on the board in the fourth with an RBI groundout by Glenn Jones. Dayton 1, Kentucky 4
- Top of 6th – Aaron Huesman closed the gap further in the sixth with a solo home run to left. Dayton 2, Kentucky 4
- Top of 7th- After loading the bases with nobody out, Nick Weybright hit a sacrifice fly to left, making it a one-run game. Dayton 3, Kentucky 4
- Bottom of 8th - Kentucky added to its advantage before the game was halted for good. Dayton 3, Kentucky 5
KEY STATS
- The Flyers matched the Wildcats with seven hits each, but left eight runners stranded compared to UK's three left on base.
- Huesman led the way with a 3-for-3 outing, reaching base four times. He was a double shy of hitting for the cylce in the game. Nick Weybright went 2-for-3 with an RBI as well.
- Dayton did not commit an error in the game.
- Huesman's home run in the sixth was his third of the season and 18th RBI.
- Starter Mason Kutruff (L, 2-5) pitched two innings, allowing four runs on four hits, suffering the loss.
- Relievers Jason Johnson, Masashi Sakamoto, Sam Brunner, and Tyler Henry each tossed a shutout inning out of the bullpen.
