Flavin finishes fourth at USATF Junior Nationals

The Freshman Runner Was The First To Compete At This Event

SACRAMENTO – USA Track and Field held its Junior Outdoor Championships this weekend with University of Dayton rising sophomore J.P. Flavin finishing fourth overall in the 10,000m event.

Flavin posted a time of 31:55.08 to take fourth place in an event he was seeded fifth in. It is the first time a Flyer has competed at the Junior Nationals for the men's cross country program, adding to the noteworthy performance for Flavin.

He competed against the likes of Florida State, Gonzaga, Lipscomb, and Bucknell in a talented field of runners.

"J.P. had a really great day today," said head coach Jason Ordway. "It was an awesome competitive effort. He ended up finishing fourth in the country. We were hoping for a Top 5 finish so we were looking for him to stick it out and finish that high. It bodes really well for him and the program, and shows really how far he's come over the last year, finishing out his freshman year with a bang. He looked really strong the whole way through. The weather ended up cooperating because they moved the meet up and I think that helped all the kids out there. He just ran into some really good competition. We are looking good and feeling good for the future. I think that J.P. will continue to lead throughout his time here at Dayton with the way he has grown and has advanced in his career so far. Just to see him run with this kind of poise at a big meet like this, I think he'll be able to use that going forward and help out the other guys as they go along. Very good day out in Sacramento and we are looking forward to the fall."

That completes the 2016-17 Dayton men's cross country season. The Flyers open up the 2017-18 school year with the Rich Davis Flyer 5K Challenge on Sept. 2 in Kettering, Ohio.
