The University of Dayton baseball team travels to High Point, N.C. for a weekend series with High Point University, beginning with a 4 p.m. game on Friday, Feb. 23 at Williard Stadium. The next game will be on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. and will close with a 1 p.m. matchup on Sunday, Feb. 25.
ABOUT DAYTON (1-2)
Dayton is coming off a 1-2 weekend at the Spartanburg Opening Weekend Classic. The Flyers outhit their opponents in all three games and had three players named to the All-Tournament Team, including junior
Pat Meehan, redshirt sophomore
Brandon Smith and freshman
Riley Tirotta. Meehan hit two leadoff home runs and hit .538 on the weekend, while Smith and Tirotta both hit a .455 with five hits apiece.
Dayton will return to the same weekend rotation on the mound this weekend, with
Austin Cline headlining the group as Friday's starter, followed by
Jordan Cox and
Peter Rozman. Cox struck out a career-high nine batters last weekend against Evansville en route to earning his first career win. A key for the Dayton pitching staff will be to cut down on free passes, as the Flyers walked a total of 20 batters last weekend. The Flyers got off to an impressive start defensively last weekend with only one recorded error, which is good for a .991 fielding percentage.
Dayton averaged over 10 hits per game in its opening three games and has a .305 team batting average. Along with the aforementioned All-Tournament performers, the Flyers also got strong performances at the plate from
Takahiro Yamada, who set a new career high with three hits in the team's win over Evansville and is tied for second on the team with three RBI, while hitting 4-for-8 (.500) on the weekend. Sophomore
Mitchell Garrity, a Purdue transfer, went for 4-for-12 (.333), including a double off the wall in Dayton's loss to Wofford, and leads the team with four runs batted in.
ABOUT HIGH POINT (1-3)
High Point struggled to generate runs in the opening weekend with just five runs scored in its first three games, all losses to James Madison, but the Panthers bounced back in a big way on Wednesday with a 10-3 win over North Carolina A&T. Despite the team's offensive outburst against the Aggies, the Panthers are still just hitting .207 as a team and average 3.8 runs a game.
Senior Austen Zente has been High Point's top offensive threat so far this season. The High Point, N.C. native is hitting .389 at the plate with 18 at-bats, has the Panthers only home run this season, and leads the team with three stolen bases. Sophomore Joe Johnson has two extra base hits for the Panthers and is also second on the team with two stolen bases.
Like Dayton, High Point will also use the same three starters for this series as they did for opening weekend. No starter has pitched longer than 4.1 innings in a start this season for the Panthers, but the team has several arms in the bullpen to lean on, when necessary. High Point has five relievers with at least two innings pitches that have yet to allow a single run and have allowed just three combined hits in 11.2 innings pitched.
