Baseball Falls Late At Memphis On Saturday

Team Will Finish Weekend Series on Sunday

Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Dayton baseball team gave up two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to fall to Memphis on Saturday 3-2.

Dayton's record now stands at an even 3-3 through six games in 2020.

Coach's Corner
"Ben Olson did a tremendous job and gave us a good chance to win a ballgame today," head coach Jayson King said. "That was big as we move forward throughout the year. We need to do a better job of learning from our mistakes and continue to work on improving on a daily basis. The compete-level was there today but we can play much better for sure."

On the Mound
Ben Olson continued the trend of strong performances by the starting pitchers for Dayton. The lefty threw six scoreless innings for the Flyers allowing only one hit and striking out six.

Dylan Keller entered in the seventh and gave up a leadoff home run but also pitched out of a jam when the Tigers managed to get runners on second and third with nobody out. The sophomore got three consecutive pop outs to Benjamin Blackwell to eliminate the threat in the seventh.

After Keller pitched a scoreless eighth, Jared Howell entered in the ninth. After a leadoff home run tied the game, Memphis got a runner to third and a wild pitch finished the game.

Scoring Plays
Top 4: (1-0 Flyers)
Benjamin Blackwell started the inning with a single up the middle. He advanced to second on a single to left by Alex Brickman and to third on a fly out by Jared Howell. A passed ball scored the sophomore and put the Flyers up 1-0.

Bottom 7: (Tied 1-1)
Nick Jones led off the inning with a home run off of Dylan Keller to tie the game.

Top 8: (2-1 Flyers)
Michael Cleary led off the eighth inning with a base hit to right. Mariano Ricciardi followed with a ground ball to third. The throw got away from the Memphis first baseman and went all the way to the wall in a wide foul territory. This allowed Cleary to go all the way around to score from first and give the Flyers a one-run advantage.

Bottom 9: (3-2 Tigers)
The Tigers led off the inning with a home run to left center field to tie the game at two. The Tigers then walked, put down a sacrifice bunt, and intentionally walked putting runners on first and second with one out. The runner advanced to third on a fielder's choice and with two outs a wild pitch from Howell brought the winning run home.

Key Stats:
Benjamin Blackwell: 3-4, 1 run, 1 SB
Michael Cleary: 2-3, 1 run, 1 SB
Ben Olson: 6 IP, 1 hit, 0 runs, 6 Ks
