Obi Toppin Named A-10 Player Of The Week

Flyer Forward Made 10-Of-11 Shots In UD’s Regular-Season-Championship-Clinching Win

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – University of Dayton forward Obi Toppin was named the Atlantic 10's Men's Basketball Player of the Week for his performance in Dayton's wins at George Mason and against Davidson at home.  The Davidson win secured an outright A-10 Regular Season Championship for the Flyers.

The redshirt sophomore from Brooklyn Toppin averaged 21.0 points and 9.5 rebounds as Dayton's two wins clinch the A-10 regular season championship.  He shot .696 (16-23) FG, .500 (3-6) 3-pt., and .700 (7-10) FT.  He scored 19 at George Mason on Tuesday, and then on Friday's title-clinching win vs. Davidson, he had 23 points with 12 rebounds, and made 10 of 11 of his field goal attempts (3-4 3-pt.). He also had four assists.

Also during the Davidson game, he surpassed Chris Wright's Dayton career record for dunks.  Toppin now has 179 dunks in 62 games and needs four to reach 100 this season.

The only player in Division I who is averaging 19.0 points a game, 7.0 rebounds a game and shooting over 60% from the field, Toppin has earned plenty of national recognition.    He is on the watch list of five national awards, including the Wooden Late Season Watch List and the Mid-Season USBWA Oscar Robertson Watch List .The Athletic tabbed him its Mid-Season Player of the Year. The Sporting News has named him one of its First Team Mid-Season All-Americans.

The Flyers tied the A-10 record for single-game FG% in the Davidson win (.723, 34-47).  It was also the second-best single-game mark at Dayton (Coach Anthony Grant played in the record-setting game --.775, 31-40 vs. South in 1985-86).  Dayton made 27 of 28 two-point field goals in the game, missing just its first two-pointer of the evening.

Dayton is 27-2 for the first time in school history, has won 18 games in a row in a single season for the first time since the Flyers won 20 in 1951-52, and are 16-0 in the A-10 for the first time ever.  The 18-game winning streak is tied with New Mexico State for the longest in the nation.

UD is back on the court Wednesday, when the Flyers play at Rhode Island.  Game time is 9 p.m. ET.  The Flyers will close out the regular season on Saturday at sold-out UD Arena against George Washington at 7 p.m. ET.
