DAYTON - University of Dayton men's basketball freshman
Malachi Smith and women's basketball sophomore
Makira Cook have been named the
Ohio's CollegeAdvantage Student-Athletes of the Week for contests during the week of Nov. 22-28.
Hailing from Bronx, New York, Smith averaged 11.3 points, 6.3 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 steals in wins over Miami, third-ranked Kansas and Belmont and was named the MVP of the ESPN Events Invitational. He made 15 of his 26 field goals (.556) and drained all three of his free throws. None were bigger than the last two. Smith sank both ends of a one-and-one with 16 seconds left that proved to be the difference in the championship game win.Â
A Cincinnati native, Cook was named All-Tournament First Team at the Daytona Beach Invitational this past week in games against Mississippi State and Illinois. The sophomore guard averaged 18.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game while shooting 39.4 percent overall and 46.2 percent from three. Cook capped off the week with a team-high 21 points and tied a career-high with three threes in the win over Illinois.
Each week we will recognize Dayton student-athletes throughout the end of the school year.
