NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The University of Dayton men's tennis team saw five named to Atlantic 10 All-Conference teams as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. Junior
Connor Bruce was named to the Atlantic 10 Men's Tennis First Team, while seniors
Will Harper and
Steven Karl, junior
Matt DeMarco, and sophomore
Ronit Hiryur were named to the Second Team. Bruce and Hiryur were also named to the All-Academic Team to make it seven awards given to the Flyers.
Â
This marks the highest number of student-athletes earning postseason honors in program history, with the previous high being three in 2021, 2018, 2017, 2016, and 2007.
Â
After earning Rookie of the Year and First Team honors in 2021, Bruce followed that with his second appearance on the All-Atlantic 10 First Team. He joins Jordan Benjamin, Carsten Fisher, and Michael Rohana as the only Flyers to make the First Team more than once.
Â
He set a career high with 16 wins this season, finishing with 12 wins at the top singles flight as well as a tournament win in the fall, taking the Cleveland State Invitational singles title back in October. Bruce also led the team with 14 doubles wins, including going 4-0 against A-10 opponents.
Â
Hiryur played all season at No. 2 singles for the Flyers, tying with Bruce for the second-most wins on the team with 16. The sophomore won nine matches in the second singles flight, making his first appearance on an All-Conference Team. His 12 doubles victories were the second-most on the team also behind Bruce.
Â
Harper is also on his first All-Conference team after winning 10 singles matches this season between the flights 4-6. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President was also the recipient of the RUDY Award and ranks in the top 25 in program history in both singles and doubles victories. He went 10-3 in dual matches in doubles play, going 4-0 against A-10 opponents.
Â
DeMarco is on the All-Atlantic 10 Second Team for the second-consecutive year after reaching double-digit wins for the first time in his career, finishing with 13 wins in singles play. The junior clinched the team's opening round match against Saint Louis in the Atlantic 10 Championship and also picked up a victory in the team's win over Saint Joseph's in the semifinals.
Â
Karl finishes his career as one of the most successful players in program history, and ends with his second-straight appearance on the All-Atlantic 10 Second Team. Karl ranks seventh in program history in singles victories and tied for sixth with 53 career doubles wins. Karl won six of his last eight decisions and clinched a spot in the Atlantic 10 Championship Match with a win in the semifinals over Saint Joseph's.
Â
It also marks the first time since 2012 that the Flyers have had someone on the All-Academic Team and the first time since 2003 that Dayton has had two members of that team with both Bruce and Hiryur's addition in 2022. Both were named ITA Scholar Athletes in 2021 and followed that up with another strong year academically.
