DAYTON - The University of Dayton softball team will head to Clarksville, Tennessee, today to take part in the Governors Classic this weekend. The two-day, four-game event for UD is being hosted by Austin Peay and all games will be played at the Governors' Cathi Maynard Park.

ABOUT DAYTON
Dayton (6-9) dropped a narrow 5-4 decision at No. 16 Kentucky on Wednesday as the Wildcats claimed the one-run win in come-from-behind fashion. The Flyers' offense is led by sophomore Emma Schutter with a .447 average (1st A-10), 21 hits (2nd A-10) and 10 runs scored and senior Emily Daniel (.368) has tallied 14 hits and collected 10 stolen bases (1st A-10). Freshman Izzy Kemp (1-3) leads UD's pitching corps with a 1.46 ERA (2nd A-10), 50 strikeouts (2nd A-10) and three complete games over 33.2 innings pitched.

SCOUTING BELMONT
Belmont (11-6) went 2-3 at No. 7 Tennessee's Classic this past weekend with wins over Appalachian State and Jacksonville State. Baie Ensio (.316) leads the Bruins' offense with 18 hits and 13 runs and Kristen Green carries the team's best average of .375 on the strength of 15 hits. In the circle, Maya Johnson (7-3) paces the team with a 3.00 ERA and 78 strikeouts over 57.0 innings pitched.

SCOUTING UIC
UIC (0-17) was in Norman, Okla., last weekend for the OU Tournament March 3-5 and squared off against then-No. 1 ranked Oklahoma and No. 16 Kentucky for a total of four games. On offense, Anna Walker (.286) has tallied a team-best 12 hits and scored a team-high seven runs. She's one of two Flames to have started all 17 games this season. UIC's pitching staff is led by Christina Toniolo (0-8) with a 4.23 ERA and 27 strikeouts.

In the NCAA's Rating Percentage Index (RPI) for games through March 8, Dayton came in at 149 according to NCAA.com. Belmont was ranked 52nd and UIC was ranked 252nd.

As a team, Dayton was 63-for-74 in stolen bases as a team in 2022 - the 63 stolen bases ranked second in the Atlantic 10. After 14 games in 2023, the Flyers are 26-for-30 in stolen bases led by senior Emily Daniel (10-for-11, 1st A-10) and sophomore Emma Schutter (8-for-8, 3rd A-10). The 26 team stolen bases on the season ranks second in the Atlantic 10.

#WINNING
Dayton head coach Cara Clark-LaPlaca tallied her 233rd career win at UD on April 15, 2017 at La Salle, surpassing former Flyer head coach Jodi Eickemeyer as Dayton's all-time winningest coach. She now has 351 wins at UD. Notable - coach Clark-LaPlaca currently has 482 overall career wins as a head coach.

THREE STRIKES YOU'RE OUT
Over 33.2 innings pitched in nine appearances for the Flyers, freshman right-handed pitcher Izzy Kemp currently ranks second in the Atlantic 10 with 50 total strikeouts and first in the league with 17 batters struck out looking. Her average of 10.4 strikeouts per seven innings ranks 24th in all of Division I.

CAREER CRIMINALS
Senior Emily Daniel and sophomore Emma Schutter have moved into Dayton's top 10 all-time stolen bases list this season. Daniel, who spent her freshman season (2020) at Wright State, is tied with Tiffany Ricks (2012-15) in seventh place with 34 career stolen bases while Schutter ranks eighth with 31.
