Women’s Basketball Grabs First Conference Win Over Loyola

Two Flyers Dropped 22 Points In The Victory

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team took down Loyola Chicago in an Atlantic 10 conference battle at home on Saturday. 
 
The Flyers (7-8, 1-3 A-10) grab their first conference victory while the Ramblers (7-7, 1-2 A10) suffer their second defeat of the conference campaign.

GAME BREAKDOWN
1st Quarter: Dayton 16, Loyola 16
  • The Flyers got on the board quickly after junior Arianna Smith converted a layup off of an assist from junior Ivy Wolf.
  • Smith struck again after grabbing a rebound off a Wolf assist and putting it back up for two points. 
  • Smith got her third basket off the game off of another rebound to make the score 7-6 Loyola with seven minutes left in the quarter. 
  • Wolf got her first bucket of the game on the next possession with a driving layup to give Dayton the lead at 8-7. 
  • Junior Shannon Wheeler got herself on the board with a layup off of an assist from freshman Riley Rismiller to tie the game at 10-10 with 3:38 left in the quarter. 
  • After a long possession in which the Flyers grabbed multiple offensive rebounds, Smith finally finished off a contested layup to draw the Flyers closer at 12-14. Smith now has a team-high eight points.
  • Wolf made two consecutive jumpers at the end of the quarter to tie the score at 16 going into the break. 
  • Smith led all players with eight points and six rebounds at the end of one quarter. 
  • Dayton dominated on the boards in the first quarter grabbing 12 rebounds to Loyola's two. 
2nd Quarter: Dayton 26, Loyola 35
  • The Flyers continued to be strong defensively to start the second quarter as sophomore Nayo Lear recorded a block and rebound on the first possession of the period. 
  • Neither team managed to score through the first two and a half minutes of the quarter until redshirt senior Destiny Bohanon broke through with a three with 7:17 to play.
  • After Loyola responded with a three of their own, Bohanon hit her second consecutive three to give the Flyers a 22-19 lead. 
  • After Loyola regained the lead at 23-22, senior Anyssa Jones converted a putback layup through a foul to regain the lead at 24-23 with 5:21 to play in the quarter. 
  • At the media timeout, Loyola had made their last four field goal attempts but Dayton continued to battle only trailing by one.
  • Bohanon continued to impress in the second quarter as she finished a crafty layup for her eighth point of the period. The Flyers trail 27-26 with 3:36 left to play.
  • A Loyola three as time expired gave them a 35-26 lead heading into the half. The Flyers end the half on an over three-and-a-half minute scoring drought which allowed Loyola to take a 12-2 run into halftime. 
  • Smith and Bohanon lead the team with eight points each. Smith leads all players with nine rebounds. 
  • The Flyers lead in the rebounding battle with 22 to Loyola's 11. 
3rd Quarter: Dayton 45, Loyola 51
  • Wolf got the second half started with a bang, knocking down a three on the Flyers' first possession.
  • Graduate student Mariah Perez got herself on the board hitting a layup on the very next possession to draw the Flyers back within four at 31-35.
  • Perez scored her second consecutive basket on the next possession with a tough layup through contact.
  • Perez scored yet again on the next possession to tie the game at 35 with 7:22 left in the quarter. 
  • Smith converted a layup through the foul to draw level again at 37. She gave the Flyers the lead with a successful and-one. 
  • Wolf extended the lead to three on the next possession with a successful mid-range jumper. 
  • After Loyola swung the lead back in their favor, Bohanon knocked down a corner three to tie the game at 43 with 3:33 left in the quarter.
  • Wolf scored once again to reclaim the lead at 45-43 with 2:47 left to play.
  • Loyola finished the quarter on an 8-0 run as they took a 45-51 lead into the break. 
  • Wolf's seven points in the quarter saw her leading the team with 13.
  • Dayton continued to dominate the rebounding battle with 28 to Loyola's 18.
4th Quarter: Dayton 69, Loyola 64
  • Wolf got the scoring started with a three on the Flyers' first possession of the quarter.
  • After a Loyola bucket in response, Wolf hit another three to draw Dayton back within two at 51-53 with 8:17 to play.
  • A Bohanon three would give the Flyers a one-point lead with 7 minutes remaining.
  • After a Jones rebound on the defensive end, Bohanon converted a fast break layup to extend the lead to 58-55 with six minutes remaining. 
  • An over four-minute scoring drought for the Flyers saw Loyola regain the lead at 58-59 before Ivy Wolf knocked down a three with 1:36 remaining to put her over 20 points on the afternoon at 22.
  • After Loyola regained the lead at 61-62 Anyssa Jones converted through contact to edge the Flyers back in front with 48 seconds remaining.
  • This would prove decisive, as the Flyers would convert their free throw attempts and hold on to win. 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
38 - The Flyers grabbed 38 rebounds as a team compared to the Ramblers' 26 boards.
22 - Ivy Wolf and Destiny Bohanon each scored 22 points on the afternoon, which was a new season high for Bohanon.
11 and 15 - Arianna Smith recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 11 points and 15 rebounds. 
8-for-18 – Dayton hit eight threes in the game, the third most in a contest this year.
 
KEY STATS
16 – The Flyers tied a season high with 16 lead changes in the win.
